Samsung is serious: 4 Android updates and 5 years of support for the 2021 and 2022 flagships
Last year, Samsung committed to providing four years of software support for its phones and tablets -- that's three major operating system updates and four years of security patches. This commitment applied to both the flagships and the models of the A and M series. Now Samsung has decided to extend the lifecycles of its flagship models by another year.
Shortly before the release of the new Galaxy S22 and Galaxy Tab S8 series, there were already clear indications that Samsung would extend support and the update guarantee again. And so it is now, the newly announced models of the Samsung Galaxy S22 and Galaxy Tab S8 series get four new generations of Android and security patches for five years. Since they start with Android 12, they should go all the way up to Android 16 and get their last patch in 2027.
There's good news for owners of a 2021 Samsung flagship - they too will be on the same software support schedule, meaning they'll get one more operating system update and an extra year of patches than originally planned. This applies to the Galaxy Z3 foldable devices and the flagship Galaxy S21 series (including the Galaxy S21 FE). However, the Galaxy S20 series and older foldables remain on the 4-year schedule.
