OnePlus rejects Unified OS, global models appear with OxygenOS with strong reference to Stock Android

OnePlus Oppo Unified OS

It was a bit of a surprise when OxygenOS 13 was announced a few days ago. It was actually assumed that OnePlus would rely on a unified OS as a merger of OxygenOS and ColorOS in the future. But nothing will come of it, at least internationally.

OnePlus' future under the Oppo umbrella has largely been up in the air, but today OnePlus is finally offering some clarity. In a lengthy forum post, OnePlus' Pete Lau has announced that OxygenOS isn't going away and that plans to run OnePlus phones with a "unified" ColorOS and OxygenOS are no more to come.

For months, it had been expected that OnePlus would further merge its experience with Oppo, resulting in a "unified" operating system that would essentially be a combination of OxygenOS and ColorOS, and would be used on both OnePlus and Oppo phones worldwide.

Now those plans are thrown out the window. Pete Lau says Oppo and OnePlus will keep ColorOS and OxygenOS as separate experiences forking from the same shared code base.

"While OxygenOS and ColorOS will continue to be developed on the same code base - to enable faster updates and better build quality - OxygenOS and ColorOS will remain independent brand properties. This new course was charted in accordance with feedback from our community – we understand that OxygenOS and ColorOS users want each operating system to remain separate with its own characteristics."

Pete Lau

Lau also confirmed that OxygenOS 13 is coming, but didn't give any real details on exactly what the update will bring -- which isn't surprising given that Android 13 only made its debut as a developer preview earlier this month.

"With OxygenOS 13, we want to deliver an experience that long-time OnePlus users will be familiar with, while ensuring that it retains the hallmarks of OxygenOS, such as a fast and smooth experience, redundant design, and ease of use. OxygenOS 13 will retain its unique visual design and a number of exclusive customization features."

Pete Lau

In the same post, the company confirmed that it is working with the "community and Google" to "deliver a familiar OxygenOS experience" that's more akin to what we've come to expect from OnePlus phones. So that means it will probably go more in the direction of stock Android again. After all, this ensured that OnePlus' user interface was extremely fast and fluid.
