Motorola creates a foldable phone that does everything upside down
Motorola was one of the first smartphone manufacturers to build a foldable phone in the design of the legendary clamshell phone, the RAZR. The smartphone has not really established itself due to various points. Now Motorola has a new idea in a patent that basically turns everything on its head.
Motorola wants to fold folding cell phone outwards
Classic folding cell phones, which are modeled on clamshell cell phones, can be folded together with the main screen and have a second screen on the outside. There is a good reason for this, because the sensitive screen is perfectly protected during transport. According to a patent, Motorola is taking a completely different approach. The company, which belongs to Lenovo, wants to bend the main display outwards so that it can still be reached when it is closed. This is how Motorola can save itself the second display on the outside:
Basically, Motorola is turning the phone completely around. The thicker area on the front now simply moves to the back, allowing for an almost borderless display . The hinge pushes the display outwards so that you have a rounded transition. In this case, the screen is not really bent, but only bent. This could have the advantage that no crease will be visible in the display.
The biggest disadvantage of this construction is, of course, that the display of the Motorola cell phone would be completely unprotected . So it would have to be a very resistant surface, which is simply not available at the moment. The flexible panels from Samsung have gotten a lot better, but you still have to be careful here. Motorola would have to find a solution for this.
This is what Motorola's folding cell phone looks like so far:
So far only one patent from Motorola
Since this is only a patent, Motorola's implementation in a final product is not guaranteed. It would still be interesting to see how such a foldable phone would work. It would at least be a completely new idea that nobody has built before.
