Meta: Facebook and Instagram remain in Europe
It was clear! Meta has now made it unmistakably clear that Facebook, Instagram & Co. will continue to be offered in Europe. In the last few days there have been rumors that people have allegedly thought about leaving Europe because of the strict GDPR. But even then it was clear that it wasn't really meant to be taken seriously.
So now Meta has finally officially commented on the reports of the last few days and made a statement. There it says that one does not want to and will not leave Europe under any circumstances. Instead, they are finally relying on clear legal data transfers in the countries.
"There has been reporting in the press that we are "threatening" to leave Europe because of the uncertainty over EU-US data transfer mechanisms. This is not true. Like all publicly-traded companies, we are legally required to disclose material risks to our investors. Last week, as we have done in our previous four financial quarters, we disclosed that continuing uncertainty over EU-US data transfers mechanisms poses a threat to our ability to serve European consumers and operate our business in Europe."

Since the company is listed on the stock exchange, it was also obliged to inform its investors about significant risks. And in the end it was just hot air after all. Maybe Meta just wanted to put pressure on the EU, which didn't really work? Because many had hoped that the data octopus could really withdraw from Europe. Unfortunately not.
