Google is very enthusiastic about the dynamic color design. Material You is one of the most fun parts of Android 12 on the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, and Google is working to bring similar theming to many of its other products. It looks like it's going to show up in more places in the near future.
According to a trusted source, dynamic theming will soon be a requirement for any Android phone or tablet that ships with Android 12 or gets an upgrade to Android 12 — at least if they want to use Google apps.
Citing internal Google documents, it is reported that starting March 14, Google will require that all new Android 12-based software builds submitted for Google Mobile Services (GMS) approval use dynamic theming implement an engine that meets specific requirements. In particular, the engine must be able to generate five tonal palettes based on a single source color that can be adjusted on the fly - three accent palettes and two neutral palettes, the same five used in the Material You theming on the Pixel phones will. This consistency is important for developers who want to implement dynamic theming in their own apps.
While the Monet engine that powers Material You's colorful look was initially developed exclusively for the Pixel 6, Android 12L brings it fully into the AOSP. This means that in order to qualify for GMS, manufacturers can either create their own compatible dynamic theming engines or implement Google's Monet directly.
In the latter case, OEMs must either base new builds on Android 12L or port a handful of patches from Android 12L back into their future Android 12-based builds. According to Mishaal Rahman, some manufacturers like Xiaomi and Motorola have already started porting these patches from Google's internal Android 12L repository. Samsung's Android 12-based One UI 4, on the other hand, offers a dynamic wallpaper theme that isn't powered by Monet.
This isn't the first new GMS requirement we've seen in the last few months. In December, we learned of a GMS requirement for Android 12's settings menus to include a "Security and Emergency" page.
