Is Meta shutting down Facebook and Instagram in Europe due to GDPR?
Meta is putting pressure on Europe right now. The reason is the GDPR. And Meta is also threatening to shut down Facebook and Instagram in Europe if push comes to shove. The restrictions due to the GDPR are simply too high for Meta.
Facebook and Instagram among the most popular social networks Nevertheless, Meta, the parent company behind it, is considering discontinuing the two networks in Europe soon. Because the current GDPR puts a spanner in the works for the data collection frenzy.
Meta would like to transfer the data collected in Europe to US servers in order to then process it there. This is regulated by the EU-US Privacy Shield, but this was overturned by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in July 2020.
But Meta needs this data in order to evaluate and place the corresponding personal advertising. And if this is not possible, then a large part of the income could no longer be generated.
As always, it's all about money. But I doubt if Meta will really switch off Facebook and Instagram in Europe.
