iPhone 14: Three mistakes Apple must avoid at all costs

This year, too, many potential customers and market observers have high expectations of the future Apple cell phone. In today's edition of the weekend column, we're therefore going into the question of which three mistakes Apple must avoid with the iPhone 14 at all costs.

We all know this ... over weeks, even months, expectations build up that Apple can't always live up to. In the end, disappointment awaits and the new iPhone is not what we had hoped for. It will also be no different with regard to the upcoming iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro.

iPhone 14 without blemish

In my opinion, there are three main requirements that Apple should, and actually has to, meet better when presenting the iPhone 14 in the fall. If not, there is a risk of frustration and sooner or later this could also be reflected in lower demand. Here are the mistakes I think Apple would ideally avoid with the iPhone 14:

1. Continue to install a notch: The times of the display notch are over, to be honest, I want more space in the top menu bar again. Would like to see exactly the remaining battery capacity as a percentage or also know whether the alarm clock has already been set. For all this I have to go to the control center first, an unnecessary swipe of a finger. Rumor has it that Apple will actually give the Pro models an alternative punch-hole design, which will make all of this possible again. But why not also with the standard models? Even the simple iPhone 14 and the rumored iPhone 14 Max with a larger display should do better without a notch.

The new Galaxy S22 Ultra from Samsung also comes without a camera bump:

2. Still using that ugly camera bump: Currently, the bigger the camera bump, the better the camera! It's total nonsense, of course, but in recent years the industry has cultivated and nurtured exactly such an image. Apple was anything but innocent, as a look at the massive excesses on the iPhone 13 Pro shows. But there is another way. The new Galaxy S22 Ultra from Samsung, for example, does without it, but still has more lenses and is just a bit thicker. Advantage: More battery and thus hopefully more runtime. Such a design would also look good on the iPhone 14 – the camera bulge has to go.

3. 120 Hz display only for the top model: The fast and yet energy-saving ProMotion display is currently only available in the two Pro versions. If this remains the case with the iPhone 14, then this is a serious mistake. Even before the iPhone 13, the Android competition installed fast screens in much cheaper smartphones. If Apple also dispenses with the normal iPhone 14, this embarrassment could hardly be covered up. You pay a premium price and don't get a premium display? Unexplainable in 2022.

My thoughts for the weekend: The column aims to provide food for thought and reflect on the week's "news flood" towards the end. A small selection of previous articles in the column:

Germany without Facebook and WhatsApp: Every bet, you don't dare Smartphones 2022: The camera hump must finally die Enough: The limits of networking with iPhone and Co.

TouchID? Thanks to the software update, this is no longer necessary

By the way: If you still miss the missing Touch ID sensor in this list, let me tell you: From iOS 15.4 and the iPhone's additional ability to recognize the face even with a mask, the biggest argument for the fingerprint sensor is actually obsolete . So I could continue to do without it in the future.

Have a nice Sunday.
