Honor Magic 4 Pro presented: Samsung faces tough competition

With the Honor Magic 4 Pro, the Chinese company has introduced a really powerful high-end smartphone that can easily keep up with the Galaxy S22 Ultra or iPhone 13 Pro Max. Honor sometimes even integrates technologies that the competition doesn't offer. The company is stepping out of the shadow of Huawei.

Honor Magic 4 Pro: Top smartphone with high-end features

When you think of Honor, you still have Huawei as the parent company in mind. That's over now. After the sale of Honor, the Chinese company is independent and really turning up the heat. With the Honor Magic 4 Pro, an absolute high-end cell phone was presented , which not only surpasses the Huawei P50 Pro, but can also be a real threat to Samsung and Apple - at least that's what Honor says.

From a purely technical point of view, we would also agree. The Honor Magic 4 Pro is really well equipped. It has a third-generation LTPO OLED display that measures 6.81 inches diagonally and operates at up to 120 Hz. The brightness is specified with a maximum of 1,000 nits, so that the display can be read well in almost any lighting situation. For comparison: The Galaxy S22 Ultra achieves up to 1,750 nits. Honor is still lagging behind here. A 3D camera for secure face recognition is integrated into the display itself, which we know in a similar form from the iPhone, and the fingerprint sensor is an ultrasonic solution that Samsung also uses.

The Honor Magic 4 Pro is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, which is paired with up to 12 GB of RAM and a maximum of 512 GB of internal storage, starting at 256 GB. There is no version with 128 GB. The battery is definitely a highlight. It measures 4,600 mAh and can be charged both with a cable and wirelessly with 100 watts . No other smartphone can do that. A wireless charging station is offered as an option. The operating system is Android 12 with Magic UI 6.0. One can access all Google services and apps.

Of course, the optics also catch the eye. The front of the Honor Magic 4 Pro looks almost borderless, while the huge camera unit on the back catches the eye. The 64 MP Perisko camera is integrated in the middle, which allows a 100x zoom. The main camera and the ultra-wide angle each have a resolution of 50 MP and are supposed to create very good photos and videos, especially thanks to artificial intelligence. For example, IMAX technology is also used here.

Honor Magic 4 is a bit slimmed down

While the Honor Magic 4 Pro covers the absolute high-end range, the Honor Magic 4 is a bit weaker in many areas. The smartphone is only IP54 certified and not IP68 like its big brother. There is only an 8 MP telephoto lens, no 3D scanner on the front and the battery can only be charged at 66 watts via cable.

Honor Magic 4 (Pro): price and availability

Honor does not name any prices. The market launch of the Honor Magic 4 and Magic 4 Pro should not take place until summer 2022. So we will have to be patient and hope that the smartphones are not completely overpriced. The predecessor cost 1,099 euros. We should expect to be around that range.
