Disney+ saves Star Wars: Now is the time to stop experimenting

The streaming provider Disney + is currently doing something where the cinema recently failed admirably: the rescue of Star Wars! Not an easy task, but how was that possible and what does it mean for the future of the franchise? A Middle Age Padawan's Commentary.

Now put butter on the fish! Who was really happy with the Star Wars sequel trilogy? It started out promising, but ended up being just average fare with plot holes as deep as the craters on Mustafar, but unfortunately by no means as hot and exciting.

Star Wars loses its thread, Disney+ finds it again

Seven years ago I was still optimistic. "The Force Awakens" was retro at its best and made you want more. Unfortunately, the two sequels couldn't live up to my expectations and those of many fans. The common thread was simply missing. Speaking of which, despite all the justified criticism of the prequel trilogy, the story was at least coherent, the staging perhaps not always. But everything seemed to be of one piece, precisely because George Lucas, the inventor of Star Wars and the mastermind, was still in charge. The follow-up films lacked this one voice.

Star Wars hasn't been very good for a long time, currently on Disney+:

Apparently they have now been found again at Disney+. The streaming projects have had my attention since the first season of "The Mandalorian" (IMDb score 8.8 out of 10) and they are currently celebrating a real fan festival with "The Book of Boba Fett". I don't want to give too much away, but these live-action series are by no means better than anything of Star Wars that has recently been shown in cinemas. The ratings on the IMDb speak volumes, not least the last two episodes are immune to any criticism with currently 9.4 and 9.6 out of 10 possible points. In a word: look!

How does Disney+ manage this feat of delighting new and old fans alike and simply delivering damn good entertainment? Two people are primarily responsible for this - Dave Filoni, who has been Executive Creative Director at Lucasfilm since summer 2020, and Jon Favreau. The latter is known in front of the camera mainly as Happy Hogan in the MCU (most recently in the new Spider-Man), behind the camera he laid the foundation for the Marvel success of recent years as the director of the first two Iron Man films. Filoni, on the other hand, has been a Star Wars fan from the very beginning and already made a lasting impression with "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" under George Lucas. Filoni knows Star Wars like no other and lives for the franchise, it's not commissioned work for him, it's simply a vocation.

This love of the two showrunners can be seen every second on the TV screen, everything seems to be of one piece again and with each episode comes together to form an ever-growing puzzle.

With "The Mandalorian" the current success story was started:

What about new Star Wars movies?

So what does this mean for the future of Star Wars movies? Long story short, Disney needs to stop experimenting. There are currently too many different films in development, including those by Patty Jenkins, Rian Johnson, and even MCU maker Kevin Feige should be allowed to let off steam. Thor director Taika Waititi is also set to make a film. Whereby, based on proven genius, I would generally have carte blanche.

Actually, after the current success, there can only be one direction: Give Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau the rudder for future films. Even if not necessarily as a director, then at least as a source of ideas in the background. You must take on the role that Kevin Feige fills at Marvel, a mastermind with a big-picture flair. Then some order and love will come back into the Star Wars universe, I'm sure of that.
