Clear cut at Rakuten TV: Android users are at a disadvantage
The streaming platform Rakuten TV has announced a limitation of its Android app. Accordingly, only free content will soon be visible in the app. Buying and renting are then no longer possible. Smart TVs and iOS devices are not affected.
Rakuten TV: Android content trimmed from March
Anyone who relies on the Rakuten TV streaming platform and watches series and films on an Android cell phone or tablet will soon have to get used to it. The company has informed its customers in an email that there will be a fundamental change from March 2022 . From then on, only free content will be available in the Android version.
Unlike before, customers with Android phones or tablets will no longer be able to buy or rent content from March. Subscriptions will also no longer be offered through Android, the announcement says. Anyone who still wants to watch paid films or series on Rakuten TV is referred to the streaming portal's website. The free catalog will also remain in place and the Rakuten media library will not change either (source: Caschy's blog).
The vendor has not specifically explained why this step is being taken . What is certain is that both Google and Apple receive a commission if further purchases are made via Android or iOS apps. Rakuten may no longer agree with this practice. It remains unclear why Rakuten only cuts its own Android app and not the version for iOS as well.

Rakuten TV: No change on Chromecast and web
The web version of Rakuten TV should not change even after the current announcement. Borrowing, buying and taking out subscriptions is still possible here . Google's Chromecast is also supported as before.
Rakuten TV is considered one of the smallest streaming providers in comparison. Founded in 2010 by the Japanese company Rakuten, films and series from Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. as well as independent filmmakers are available.
