According to a report by Reuters, BlackBerry announced Monday that it has reached an agreement to sell legacy patents, primarily related to mobile devices, messaging and wireless networking, to Catapult IP Innovations Inc. for $600 million.
The Waterloo, Ontario, Canada-based company said the deal does not include patents critical to its core business. BlackBerry will continue to receive licenses for the patents sold, and customers' use of the company's products and services will not be impacted in any way.
The patents primarily relate to mobile devices, messaging and wireless networks, and the deal will not affect use of BlackBerry's products, solutions or services, according to Reuters.
Catapult is a special purpose vehicle formed solely to acquire the BlackBerry patents. Now with a lot of debt and no income. And you have to generate these quickly! This means that the next patent troll will try as quickly as possible to make money out of his new patents or to make money out of them.
