Bitter smartwatch smack: The 1.4 billion problem for Samsung and Apple

Anyone who owns a smartwatch is likely to wear a model from Samsung or Apple on their wrist. The heavyweights share a large slice of the smartwatch pie among safe. Ironically, in an important future market, the two manufacturers now have to accept a real setback.

In Europe and the United States, growth opportunities are limited and the smartwatch market is saturated. Samsung and Apple also know this, which is why they are increasingly targeting developing and emerging countries. But last year things did not go at all in one of the most important future markets: India.

Indian smartwatch market: Samsung and Apple drop out of the top 5

There, both fell out of the top 5 of the largest smartwatch manufacturers , as figures from the market researchers from Counterpoint Research show - a real crash, because in 2020 Apple with 10 percent and Samsung with 6 percent market share were still fourth and fifth in the ranking (source : Counterpoint Research).

With almost 1.4 billion inhabitants and a rapidly growing population, India is one of the most important future markets in the world . The fact that Apple and Samsung are no longer even in the top 5 must be an alarm signal for the CEOs in Cupertino and Seoul.

The Indian market is dominated by domestic manufacturers . More than 75 percent, according to analyst Harshit Rastogi, went to Indian manufacturers in 2021. The year before it was only half.

Apple and Samsung have to step on the gas in 2022

Despite the disappointing numbers , Samsung and Apple were also able to increase . The South Koreans grew by more than 200 percent, which, according to market researchers, is mainly due to the successful Galaxy Watch Active 2 model (see video above). And the Apple Watch Series 7 also got off to a "great start" with 100,000 units shipped in the fourth quarter of 2021.

It was still not enough for the top 5 in India, so Samsung and Apple will have to step on the gas here in 2022 in order not to get further under the wheels. Overall, the Indian smartwatch market grew by 274 percent.
