Android 13 Developer Preview 1 released

Android 13 is here! Shortly after we got a new Android 12L build and the Galaxy S22 , Google rolled out the first developer version of Android 13. With many new features and exciting innovations.

As you've probably guessed, this first release is the Android 13 Developer Preview 1. This is the first of several Developer Preview builds ahead of the Android 13 betas in April.

For now, Google is telling us that Android 13 will continue to push well-known issues of privacy and security, and help developers use Android on larger screens like tablets and foldable devices. It really sounds like Google will use Android 12L as a one-off build, then bring its big-screen focus into Android 13.

At the top level, Google gives developers the ability to use Material You Dynamic Theming with icons, allowing Android 13 to have icons beyond Google's theme. Google is also adding a new photo picker for photo and video sharing, nearby WiFi permission that doesn't require device location, prompts to add Quick Settings tiles from apps, per-app language settings, and there's even more more modules that can be updated via Google Play System updates (Project Mainline).

If you have a spare Pixel phone or just don't care, you can take advantage of Android 13 Developer Preview 1 by flashing a system image. Currently supported devices include the Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6, Pixel 5a 5G, Pixel 5, Pixel 4a (5G), Pixel 4a, Pixel 4 XL and Pixel 4.
