Earlier this year, the smartphone market was in turmoil when OnwardMobility announced it was working on launching a 5G-enabled BlackBerry smartphone. However, just a few weeks later it was reported that the company had lost the rights to its name. Now this unfortunate news has been officially confirmed.
An official company statement said: "We would like to thank you all for the tremendous support you have given us since the launch of OnwardMobility. However, it is with great regret that we announce that OnwardMobility is being discontinued and we will no longer continue to develop a highly secure smartphone with a physical keyboard." Put simply, the 5G BlackBerry phone project is officially dead.
The announcement comes just six weeks after the company revealed its plans. So for anyone who was looking forward to the promised BlackBerry experience, this is unfortunate news. That means there probably won't be another BlackBerry phone for a long time, or maybe not at all.
