Xiaomi unveils MIUI 13
Xiaomi finally unveiled the MIUI 13 at the Xiaomi Series 12 launch event in China. Although this version looks like a big upgrade, it does not make a significant difference compared to MIUI 12. This is because MIUI 12.5 and the upgraded version of MIUI 12.5 already have specific changes. Most importantly, almost all of the exciting new features are likely to remain Chinese-owned. With that said, let's take a look at what MIUI 13 has to offer.
Unlike previous generations, Xiaomi now has three types of MIUI for its Android devices called MIUI 13, MIUI 13 Pad and MIUI 13 Fold. As their name suggests, the interface is now optimized specifically for smartphones, tablets and clamshells. For folds, the MIUI is a combination of both the regular MIUI and the MIUI Pad.
MIUI 13
MiSans font
The MIUI interface introduces 13 new fonts called MiSans. Xiaomi claims that this is a simple font optimized for Chinese and English languages to provide a clearer view and easier reading.
This font is part of the Dynamic Font System 2.0, and as it inherits the features of OpenType, its dash height automatically adjusts to uppercase and lowercase.
This minimalist font is currently available for download in the MIUI Themes app in China for devices running previous versions of MIUI.
Tools
Ever since OEM introduced its widgets with iOS 14, Android OEMs have been trying to reach it, although this feature has been around for years on Google. But because it has been off without any interesting progress so far, no attention has been paid to it.
Now, Xiaomi has joined the new dynamic widget competition with the MIUI 13 user interface. It should be noted that the company has been testing this feature since August 2021.
The widgets in MIUI 13 are similar to the OriginOS Ocean vivo and ColorOS 12 OPPO widgets. In other words, they are unlikely to make their way to international markets. Because these widgets are provided by prominent Chinese applications. In addition, Xiaomi offers widgets for mini-games, countdown, drinking reminders, food suggestions, and more.
Although we do not have much hope for new widgets to be available outside of China, it would be great if we could somehow deliver them.
Science beauty wallpapers
MIUI 12 introduced MIUI Super Wallpapers for live wallpapers, and MIUI 13 has partnered with Beauty of Science to provide a new collection of wallpapers.
These new background images show the crystal structure of various minerals and are in fact the result of 8K time-lapse photography using a polarizing microscope.
Just like MiSans fonts, science beauty wallpapers are available for download in China.
Adjustable Xiao Virtual Assistant
Users can create their own personalized avatar from Xiaomi Virtual Assistant in China. They can choose from over 50 sets of clothing and accessories.
Users can also choose from a variety of sounds and set a custom activation word for it.
Privacy
MIUI 13 interface is approved by more agencies than MIUI 12 for privacy. An interesting new feature was the latest version of MIUI "Virtual ID". MIUI 13, on the other hand, makes changes to the face authentication system.
Formerly the face was scanned by the system but now, the upper body is included in the scan for more information. Additionally, users can select a watermark when scanning important documents.
The system also protects users from spam contacts / texts, malicious programs and harmful file transfers.
Optimization
MIUI 13 interface brings improvements to focus computing, atomic memory and fluid storage. These three self-made technologies were introduced in MIUI 12.5 Enhanced Edition.
Xiaomi claims that system and third-party applications have improved by 20-26% and 15-52%, respectively, compared to the advanced version of MIUI 12.5. And devices like the Xiaomi Mix 4 can now easily hold an average of 14 apps in the background.
Finally, the read and write performance of phones like the Mi 11 Pro is reduced by only 5% after 36 months of use.
Mi mijia Center
The new Mi mijia Center is Xiaomi's answer to Huawei's OS Harmony Super Device, and users can manage their Xiaomi ecosystem products from there.
They can stream screen or music content from one device to another by simply swiping. Unlike Huawei, Xiaomi allows users to customize their devices with stickers for easier identification.
Only a select number of devices are compatible with Mi mijia Center.
MIUI 13 Pad
Multi-functional
MIUI 13 Pad supports floating windows. Its program windows can also be resized as needed. Hence, users can do multiple things at the same time.
Just like Apple, Samsung, Huawei and Honor devices, Xiaomi products with the MIUI 13 user interface are now compatible. Thus, users can continue working on their tablet from where they left off on their smartphone, and vice versa.
Keyboard and pen
Keyboards now support default shortcuts as well as custom shortcuts. While users can start taking notes using the pen (its official accessory) and take screenshots of each page.
Application compatibility
When Xiaomi unveiled MIUI for the Pad in August, it set a goal of implementing 2,000 apps for tablets by the end of 2021. Surprisingly, the company has managed to adapt 3,000 applications with the MIUI 13 Pad.
