The OnePlus 10 Pro is now available in China but is still awaiting a worldwide release. Before then, more details will be revealed about the rest of the OnePlus 10 lineup, including the "regular" OnePlus 10.
OnePlus has historically used Qualcomm chips almost exclusively, with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in the OnePlus 10 Pro and the OnePlus 9 series powered by the Snapdragon 888 and Snapdragon 870 in the case of the OnePlus 9R, respectively. The OnePlus Nord 2 was one of the brand's first MediaTek devices, but it seems it won't be the last.
Android Central reports with a "high level of confidence" that the "OnePlus 10R" will use the MediaTek Dimensity 9000 chip instead of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or some other Qualcomm chip. In the meantime, however, the regular OnePlus 10 will also use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, contrary to some recent rumors that claimed the phone would be going for a MediaTek SoC instead.
Why this difference? It's probably due to availability. While the OnePlus 10 will be sold worldwide including the US market, the 10R will likely only be available in India and other parts of Asia. In the US, the use of Qualcomm chips also includes the company's modems, which have been shown to work better with US networks.
Despite the switch, there probably won't be a huge difference in performance. If MediaTek's claims are true, the Dimensity 9000 will easily rival the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in terms of performance.
The OnePlus 10 and OnePlus 10R are expected to launch in the second quarter of this year, according to this report, which should also bring extended availability of the OnePlus 10 Pro.
