My Apple highlight 2022: Now I ve changed my mind

Basically, my decision was already made and my personal Apple highlight of the year 2022 was identified. Now, however, I've had to change my mind at short notice, and for good reason. I discuss my motive and a little more in today's weekend column.

Apple's mixed reality headset is being postponed

I was really looking forward to it, Apple should actually be presenting its own mixed reality headset at the WWDC (developer fair in June) and selling it at the end of 2022. Since the Apple Watch, the first real, new product with the potential to fundamentally change our technological world - already my Apple highlight of the year. Even well-known insiders are busy speculating that the iPhone will be replaced by such devices in 10 years.

But the revolution is being postponed for the time being, according to the latest findings, the futuristic data glasses can be seen at WWDC 2023 at the earliest. This year the train has left and I am forced to choose a new highlight in the portfolio of Apple innovations to be expected.

Although I would not have bought the combined VR/AR glasses straight away, I would have been pleased with Apple's will to innovate. What now? Which device can conquer my heart? I don't have to think long, an answer to this question is quickly found: It should be the new MacBook Air of the year 2022.

It is actually the device that has the highest chance of being bought by me . New iPhone 14? I don't need it, my virgin iPhone 13 will not be sold, but will be used as usual for the next few years. The same applies to the iPad Air 2. The little vintage car does its job faithfully, no need to change the guard. This looks different with my MacBook Pro.

The good piece is now 7 years old and recently even had to be treated "operatively" by me. The keyboard and trackpad gave up the ghost. Cause: A defective ribbon cable, which I replaced (see on Amazon). Now my trusty companion is working again, but the battery only has 60 percent of the original capacity anyway and there are always minor problems, for example when waking up from sleep mode. Long story short: a replacement would be appropriate and overdue.

Actually, the current MacBook Pro with a 14-inch screen would be ideal, but I don't like the higher weight or the higher price, so to speak. What I would need would be a smaller model.

And that's where the MacBook Air 2022 comes into play, which may just be called MacBook. Flat, lighter than the Pro and yet with a fresh design. So the sparrows of the rumor mill whistle it down from the roofs. With a bit of luck, there will even be an Apple M2 in the colored case – Pro and Max versions are not necessary for me. All in all, more than sufficient and a real highlight of 2022.

Certainly not just for me, there are reasons why the MacBook Air is still Apple's most successful notebook of all time. And in 2022 the next chapter will be written - I'm there.
