{Disarmed} Xiaomi broke its mobile sales records in 2021, consolidating itself on the world podium, according to Counterpoint
Like every quarter and fiscal closing, Counterpoint Research has presented its financial report and the mobile market data transmits a very positive message: the sale of smartphones is growing. It has not been like this since 2017. And Xiaomi is the second key player in this scene .
Three brands break their absolute records and break the ceiling for highest annual shipments: Apple, Xiaomi and OPPO have made history. But let's look at those numbers in more detail, there's a lot to break down.
Xiaomi maintains its third position and consolidates in the 5G market
The data. A year-on-year growth of 31%. Xiaomi has found room for growth and has achieved a record of 190 million mobile phones distributed during 2021 . Samsung also grows, but only 6%. Apple marks a rebound, growing 18% and selling a total of 237.9 units. As it was, Xiaomi aspires to be a world leader at the end of 2025 , whatever it takes and it seems that the numbers give him a reason.
When? Although 65% of the growth occurred during the first half of the year , with launches as prominent as the Xiaomi Mi 11 and its entire family, the pace remained stable until the last bars of the year. Xiaomi owes (almost) everything to POCO and Redmi , let's not forget. Of course, those 45 million extra mobile phones sold during the last quarter of the year stand out, 5% more than in 2020.
Where? The best numbers are encrypted in India, China, Southeast Asia and Europe. In Spain Xiaomi leads for the fourth consecutive year . In India, Redmi and POCO rule with a heavy hand — one in four smartphones sold in this country belong to Xiaomi —, and their numbers are excellent in 11 countries , including a share of almost 12% in Latin America and 7, 4 in Africa. Although the company remains in fifth position in China, where it faces a serious shortage of components, its figures have grown "more than estimated" compared to 2020. In summary, in 2020 they sold 145.7 million units, in 2021, 190.4 million.
What will happen next? If we talk about 5G, the new thriving mobile market is realme, with an annual growth of 763% compared to 2020 . The brand is presented as an attractive novelty in Europe and beats Xiaomi and OPPO in the 5G mobile segment. However, Xiaomi marks a remarkable second place, with a growth of 339% .
2022 seems like a strange year, according to events unrelated to the market's own synergies. The company does not intend to stop: Xiaomi has prepared a huge catalog.
The bet of the latest Redmi Note —namely, Redmi Note 11 , Redmi Note 11S , Redmi Note 11 Pro and Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G— will be accompanied by a new POCO family —with the F4 as the spearhead—, the Xiaomi 12 , which will be followed by their respective 'T' revision, as has already happened with the Xiaomi 11T and 11T Pro and several reformulations of some successful Redmi. Let's also not forget those MIX 5 and FOLD 2 in development, under a commercially more contained but technologically more ambitious approach.
