The project team from the Robert Koch Institute, Deutsche Telekom and SAP has now published version 2.16 of the Corona-Warn-App (CWA). With the update, the app now shows users their current status proof in the certificate area. If users have stored a valid vaccination or recovery certificate and a test certificate in the app, these are shown in a combined display in the certificate overview.
With version 2.16, users can see their current status proof in the upper right corner of their certificate and thus also which rule(s) their existing certificates fulfill. There are four different ways to do this:
• 3G – Stands for fully vaccinated, recovered or tested negative. According to the 3G rule, users must show one of the following certificates: vaccination or recovery certificate, rapid test certificate (maximum 48 hours old) or PCR test certificate (maximum 72 hours old).
• 3G+ – Means that access is only permitted to those who have been fully vaccinated or recovered, or those with a negative PCR test. Users must provide at least one of the following certificates: vaccination, convalescence, or PCR test certificate (maximum 72 hours old). With 3G+ status, users automatically also comply with the rules of 3G events.
• 2G – Represents fully vaccinated or recovered. If the 2G rule applies, only people who are fully vaccinated or recovered have access. Users must provide at least one vaccination or recovery certificate, but no test certificate. With 2G status, users automatically also comply with the 3G+ and 3G rule.
• 2G+ - Means that only people who are fully vaccinated or recovered and who can also show a negative test are allowed access. Users must provide proof of a vaccination or recovery certificate and also a PCR or rapid test certificate (maximum 72 or 48 hours old). With 2G+ status, users automatically also comply with the 2G, 3G+ and 3G rules.
2G+ with booster vaccination: According to the decision of the federal and state health ministers, vaccinated or recovered people who have received a booster vaccination do not currently have to submit a current test for a 2G-Plus regulation. The CWA does not yet take this regulation into account in the status display. This means that if you have a vaccination or recovery certificate and a certificate of the booster vaccination, it does not yet show the 2G+ status. The project team is already working on ensuring that the Corona-Warn-App includes certificates from booster vaccinations in the future.
If users have stored a valid vaccination or recovery certificate and a valid test certificate in the app, these are shown in a combined display from version 2.16.
Users can then use the switch to switch between the QR code of the "2G certificate" (proof of vaccination or recovery) and that of the test certificate in order to provide 2G+ proof quickly and easily. Both QR codes must be verified on-site using the CovPassCheck app along with ID card presentation if 2G+ proof is required.
Important: For data protection reasons, when the certificates are checked by the CovPassCheck app, it is not clear whether the person has a vaccination or recovery certificate. When scanning the QR codes, the inspectors only see whether the certificate is valid or not.
A negative test result is not a test certificate. A test certificate officially confirms a negative test result in the form of a QR code in the Corona-Warn-App. Users can request the official test certificate for PCR and rapid tests when registering a test in the Corona-Warn-App. To do this, they can open the universal QR code scanner in the middle of the Corona-Warn-App tab and scan the QR code for test registration. You will receive this either when booking the test or on site when testing, provided the provider is connected to the Corona-Warn-App.
After scanning the QR code, a window opens automatically in which you can request the test certificate. You can find more information in this blog: Project team publishes online quick test partner search and Corona warning app version 2.4 with digital test certificate .
Clear notification in the app when the risk status changes
Furthermore, in the case of a red tile from version 2.16, iOS users also receive a notification about the change in the risk status if they have opened the app while the risk assessment is running. This is to prevent users from overlooking the warning, for example because they are currently under the "Certificates" tab and leave the Corona-Warn-App from there without looking at their status display again.
In the past, the Corona-Warn-App notified users when the app was closed, but not when they opened the CWA. Now it uses a red dot to inform the user that there is news in the status area.
This feature is available to Android users from version 2.17 of the CWA.
Improved QR code scan on Android
Also, on Android, the project team replaced the technical library used to process QR codes to ensure improved QR code scanning. The library now used enables faster recognition of the QR code, especially in poor light conditions, with comparatively low print quality and with some types of paper.
In addition, in the event of a negative test result, users receive further recommendations for action in the CWA in the event that they still have acute health problems.
Version 2.16 will be rolled out to all users step by step over a period of 48 hours. iOS users can now download the current app version manually from the Apple store. The Google Play Store does not offer a way to initiate a manual update. The new version of the Corona warning app will be available here within the next 48 hours.
