Competition for Samsung? Honor introduces first foldable smartphone

After Samsung is ahead in terms of foldable cell phones and is also following Oppo, Honor is also launching its first foldable smartphone. The Chinese manufacturer has finally revealed what to expect from the Honor Magic V.

After Samsung has already launched a strong folding smartphone with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Oppo also wants to set accents with the Find N, Honor is now following suit and wants to continue to make a name for itself on the smartphone after separating from Huawei. Make market. In a stream (watch it on YouTube), the Chinese manufacturer has now announced what we can expect from the first Honor Magic V foldable smartphone .

Larger and narrower display than Samsung

A few days ago it was announced that the Honor Magic V will be coming onto the market with a larger display than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. When folded, the OLED display (2,560 x 1,080 pixels) from Honor impresses with 6.45 inches and 1,000 Nits, so that it is easy to read even in strong sunlight. When opened, it even reaches a screen diagonal of 7.9 inches, but only 800 nits.

The unfolded smartphone offers enough space to enjoy series and films and to work comfortably with both screens by having several applications open next to each other. However, we can only assess how good the displays really are in a corresponding test, because while the cover display has a refresh rate of 120 Hz , we only get 90 Hz when the display is opened. Although this is ultimately the eye-catcher of a foldable smartphone, the reason for the presentation was that the smartphone would continue to be used primarily in the closed mode, i.e. as a "real" smartphone by users.

Even when folded, the Honor Magic V is the narrowest folding smartphone (Image: Honor).

Honor CEO George Zhao also emphasized that the new Honor smartphone is 14.4 mm thinner than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 (16 mm) when folded and 6.7 mm when unfolded. In addition, the service life should be 200,000 folds , his calculation: If you fold the smartphone 50 times a day, it will last 10 years. Sounds very good, of course, but whether the display can withstand so many folds remains to be seen. Nevertheless, if the smartphone should fall down within 10 years, the nano-crystal glass used protects the display from scratches, as the CEO demonstrated on stage.

It should get smarter

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip works in the Honor Magic V and with a working memory of 12 GB you can expect a responsive smartphone for which demanding gaming should not be a problem and which supports 5G cellular communications. As a result, the Honor Magic V competes with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 not only in terms of the display diagonal, but also in terms of the chip.

Furthermore, the smartphone Magic UI 6.0 (based on Android 12) is a newly developed user interface, which is supposed to shine especially in terms of various AI functions and the artificial intelligence YOYO, the counterpart to Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa. The smartphone should adapt to the behavior of the user, according to the motto: "The smartphone knows what you need." For example, tickets for flights, train journeys and the like should be displayed automatically as soon as you go to the relevant terminal is approaching, the app usage should be optimized, as well as the battery usage.

The displays of the Honor Magic V are larger than those of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 (Image: Honor).

In addition, the new system and a chip integrated for it should provide more security precautions , so that on the one hand the data on the smartphone is better secured and on the other hand it is easier to locate the device in the event of theft.

Battery and camera of the Honor Magic V

With the Honor Magic V, a triple camera awaits us on the back , which is covered with 3D curved glass. The three lenses each work at 50 MP and make pictures from close-ups to ultra-wide angles possible. In addition, the front camera shoots photos with up to 42 megapixels.

Regarding the battery, it was already mentioned above that it is used optimally thanks to Magic UI 6.0. The battery should get us safely through the day with a capacity of 4,750 mAh, whereby it can be charged quickly using a 66-watt power adapter - 50 percent in just 15 minutes . When the Honor Magic V was presented, no mention was made of whether wireless charging is possible.

We dispel various myths about batteries:

When will the Honor Magic V hit stores?

The question is, of course, when we can expect the foldable Honor Magic V and how much it will cost: Honor's foldable flagship is available with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage for the equivalent of just under 1,390 euros (RMB 9,999) and with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage for just under 1,528 euros (RMB 10,999) on January 18, 2022 for the first time in China, the start of sales in Europe is not yet known. It is available in the colors Burnt Orange, Space Silver and Black.
