Is the worst over? For Nokia there has been only one direction on the smartphone in the recent past: down. In the third quarter of 2021, however, the cult brand was able to consolidate the previous upward trend. A number makes this particularly clear.
Delays, confusing product names and, most recently, even broken promises: HMD Global has tripped itself more and more frequently in recent years. That's why the sales figures fell like a dive. Now the manufacturer of the current Nokia smartphones seems to be recovering a bit.
3 million Nokia smartphones sold in the third quarter of 2021
HMD Global is said to have sold around 3 million smartphones in the third quarter of 2021 (source: Nokiamob). This is still a long way from the previous high, which the manufacturer reached in mid-2019 with 4.8 million devices - but the trend is clearly pointing in the right direction.
Only 2.7 million Nokia smartphones were sold in the second quarter and only 2 million devices at the beginning of the year. Compared to the same quarter of the previous year, this is a solid increase of 37 percent between July and September 2021. HMD Global ranks 14th in the list of the largest smartphone manufacturers in the world.
"The growth is mainly due to the markets in the Middle East, Africa and North America", the market researchers from Counterpoint told Nokiamob. There, HMD should benefit in particular from the departure of LG from the smartphone market.
