In 2022, smartphones up to 400 euros will no longer have to do without earlier upper-class features such as 5G, NFC, cameras with optical image stabilization, displays with high refresh rates and others. Xiaomi smartphones are convincing in this price range and Samsung is also represented here. If your new cell phone is convincing with a successful and future-proof interior, but should not cost more than 400 euros, we have suitable models for you in our overview.

Smartphones up to 400 euros: This is how we chose

There are many smartphones in the price range up to 400 euros. Certain characteristics were an exclusion criterion for us, such as being too old. We have partly based ourselves on our own tests, on the other hand on the results of the Stiftung Warentest - reviews are linked for the corresponding products. The results of other test sites and user ratings also influence the selection. The latter were helpful because they did not judge according to benchmark figures and other laboratory values that were not very informative, but instead emphasized individual impressions.

In a separate article you can find out more about how we at xiaomist deal with product recommendations and tests:

With our research, we at xiaomist want to recommend suitable products to you and avoid bad purchases. Your trust is important to us - that's why you can rely on us.

I myself have been dealing with cell phones and smartphones for years. From the Nokia classics to the first folding and sliding phones to smartphones I have been fascinated by all generations. Personally, not only technical innovations, but also sustainability are important to me.

Realme GT Neo 5G: Premium mobile phone at a great price

5G cellular network, outstanding performance, decent camera quality, strong battery

no camera with optical image stabilization no IP certification memory not expandable

Let's start with a smartphone that sounds like a sports car: With the GT Neo 5G, Realme has launched a smartphone that costs very little despite its really remarkable features . For "only" 370 euros (view on Amazon) you get a 5G-capable smartphone that shines with the most powerful processor in our selection. This means that if you place a lot of value on gaming, you will definitely have fun with the GT Neo 5G, and the 120 Hertz display also ensures smooth animations.

The camera of the Realme smartphone makes a good impression on paper and can keep up with the performance of the lower Samsung Galaxy A52s 5G. Still, an optical image stabilizer would round off the picture. The battery performance of the GT Neo 5G exceeds that of the original Realme GT, although our editor Peter already praised its battery performance in his test of the Realme GT. However, inductive charging and IP certification with regard to water resistance have to be dispensed with in the previous GT series.

Realme UI 2.0 operating system based on Android 11 display 6.62 inch AMOLED FHD + 2,400 x 1,080 pixels 120 Hz processor Snapdragon 870 5G RAM 8 GB internal memory 128 to 256 GB (not expandable) camera 16 MP front camera 64 MP main camera 8 MP wide angle camera 2 MP macro camera battery 5,000 mAh (quick charge function, wired) Special features 5G-capable NFC support Fingerprint and face recognition

If you want to find out more about the various IP certifications, we have a suitable xiaomist article for you:

OnePlus Nord 2 5G: Convincing overall package

5G mobile radio color-intensive AMOLED display optical image stabilizer, but ...

only satisfactory camera quality, no expandable memory, no IP certification

We are staying at BBK Electronics, which includes brands like Oppo and Realme as well as OnePlus. With the Nord 2 5G, OnePlus shows, as the name suggests, that you can also get a future-proof smartphone for less than 400 euros with 5G cellular technology (see MediaMarkt). As with the Realme above, the AMOLED display impresses with its rich colors. The Nord 2 5G also features the MediaTek Dimensity 1200-Ai, a fast eight-core processor that was specially developed for OnePlus. Together with the high graphics performance, gaming is also possible here.

Again, Stiftung Warentest (10/2021) only rated the camera as satisfactory. Although one with the Nord 2 5G from an optical image stabilizer benefits, which automatically compensates for unwanted movements during the recording, good lighting conditions are necessary for good pictures . But if you can refrain from it, with the OnePlus Nord 2 5G you still get a successful smartphone for less than 400 euros, whose battery performance is also convincing.

By the way: If you want to spend a little more money and are fans of the good old arcade games, the OnePlus Nord 2 5G is now also available in a PAC-MAN edition (check it out at OnePlus). Unpacking should already be a lot of fun.

Operating system OxygenOS 11.3 based on Android 11 Display 6.43 inch AMOLED DotDisplay 2,400 x 1,080 pixels 90 Hz Processor MediaTek Dimensity 1200-Ai RAM 6-12 GB Internal memory 128 or 256 GB (not expandable) Camera 32 MP Front camera 50 MP Main camera 8 MP ultra wide angle 2 MP mono camera, battery 4,500 mAh (quick charge function, wired) Special features optical image stabilizer 5G-capable NFC support Fingerprint sensor

Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro: Inexpensive and high quality

AMOLED display convincing camera quality high quality workmanship

no 5G cellular network no optical image stabilizer

When it comes to smartphones up to 400 euros, Xiaomi is currently on everyone's lips. So it is not surprising that we have the manufacturer on our list. Our editor Peter had already tested the Redmi Note 10 Pro in May 2021 with the conclusion that it delivers a very good overall package for just under 300 euros (view on Amazon), especially if you can do without 5G .

In terms of performance, the Xiaomi still has some room for improvement , because despite the 120 Hz display, the display can occasionally jerk . Again, don't forget about camera performance. With its 128 MP camera you can take really nice pictures, although the lighting conditions have to be right and the optical image stabilizer is missing.

But above all, the AMOLED display and the generally high-quality workmanship of the smartphone are positive. As a little gimmick, it also has an infrared sensor so that it can be used as a TV remote control.

Operating system MIUI 12 based on Android 11 Display 6.67 inch AMOLED DotDisplay 2,400 x 1,080 pixels 120 Hz Processor Snapdragon 732G RAM 6 or 8 GB Internal memory 64 or 128 GB (expandable) Camera 16 MP front camera 108 MP wide angle 8 MP ultra wide angle 5 MP tele macro camera 2 MP depth sensor, battery 5020 mAh (fast charging function, wired) Special features IP53 (protection from dust and spray water) NFC support Fingerprint and face recognition Jack connection Triple SIM slot

Samsung Galaxy A52s 5G: "You can't go wrong with every A52."

5G cellular fast processor optical image stabilizer

no inductive charging

Samsung launched several models one after the other with its Galaxy A52 series this year. At first glance, there aren't many differences between the siblings, but what counts is the inner values: The latest model, the Galaxy A52s 5G, has the Snapdragon 778G as a processor and thus four high-speed processor cores for less than 400 euros (view on Amazon). In practical terms, this means that apps, for example, run significantly faster than their predecessors.

If camera performance is your priority, you are in good hands with the whole A52 range. All models are equipped with a 64-megapixel camera, which is really impressive and also impresses with optical image stabilization. According to Stiftung Warentest, the A52-5G model is only the winner in terms of battery life with over 42 hours. The A52s, on the other hand, lasts for 33 hours. Sure, in the end the A52s 5G would be the future-proof variant, but to quote my colleague Peter: " You can't go wrong with any A52. "(More on this in the detailed xiaomist test report of the Samsung A52 5G)

Operating system OneUI 3.1 based on Android 11 Display 6.5 inch Super AMOLED 2,400 x 1,080 pixels 120 Hz Processor Snapdragon 778G RAM 6 to 8 GB Internal memory 128 or 256 GB (expandable) Camera 32 MP front camera 64 MP main camera 12 MP ultra Wide-angle 5 MP tele-macro camera 5 MP depth sensor Battery 4,500 mAh (fast charging function, wired) Special features IP67 (dust-proof and protection against brief immersion) NFC support Fingerprint sensor Jack connection Optical image stabilization

Xiaomi Poco X3 Pro: Outside hui, inside ... hui

very powerful processor reliable battery life dual video function

no 5G cellular network no inductive charging

Yes, we already had a Xiaomi in our article, but since once is not a single one, we have another model up our sleeve that we would like to recommend to you. For a smartphone up to 400 euros (see Amazon), the Poco X3 Pro is unbeatable even without 5G technology, and that's not all: With the Snapdragon 860, it has a more powerful processor than the Redmi Note 10 Pro. This brings noticeable advantages in terms of performance.

With this model, not only the processor is convincing, but also the battery. With 5,160 mAh, it runs for 45 hours at normal brightness, according to Stiftung Warentest, and is already charged after an hour and a half. We don't want to forget the camera quality at this point: With its 48 megapixels, it depends on good lighting conditions, but thanks to the dual video function , you can film with the front and rear cameras at the same time.

Xiaomi has once again used high-quality materials for the Poco X3 Pro, so that the smartphone makes a really good impression not only on the inside, but also on the outside. If you can live without 5G, with the Poco X3 Pro you get a smartphone well under 400 euros, whose low price cannot be seen.

Operating system MIUI 12 based on Android 11 display 6.67 inch FHD + dot display 2400 x 1080 pixels 120 Hz processor Snapdragon 860 RAM 6 or 8 GB internal memory 128 or 256 GB (expandable) camera 20 MP front camera 48 MP main camera 8 MP ultra Wide-angle 2 MP macro camera 2 MP depth sensor Battery 5,160 mAh (quick charge function, wired) Special features IP53 (protection from dust and spray water) NFC support Fingerprint and face recognition Jack connection

Android 12 is already available on some smartphones. In our video we explain the changes that the new operating system will bring:

A note on the prices: Most Android smartphones are subject to strong price fluctuations, especially in the first 6 months after the market launch, these fall the fastest. Deal events like Prime Day, Black Friday and Cyber Monday also have a strong influence on prices. We keep you up to date on current offers in our deal overview, it is worth taking a regular look at current offers!
