{Disarmed} This is how the MIUI design has evolved, from the first to the last

This is how the MIUI design has evolved, from the first to the last

No less than 11 years have passed from the first MIUI iteration to the imminent MIUI 13 . MIUI was, in reality, Xiaomi's Trojan horse, its first product, its first idea, its first dream to conquer the mobile market . There was a time when the world's number 2 only aspired to sneak into other people's smartphones in the back room. Not anymore, of course.

Today we review this part of its history . And we do it through its iconography (with official MIUI images from Weibo ), its aesthetics and some of the design details that have led MIUI to be what it is: one of the most versatile Android customization layers, attractive and fluid. More than 500 million people cannot be wrong.

MIUI 1, the birth of the myth

On Android 2.2 (Froyo) was born on August 16, 2010 this "initial interface". The company at that time was a startup, Xiaomi Tech , founded by seven partners - this business structure would not dissolve until 2014, after becoming the most valuable startup in history, for 46,000 million dollars.

The offer was undoubtedly ambitious: to present alternative applications for the photo gallery , the application for managing music files , managing backups, uploading files, voice chats, notes ... without leaving aside that characteristic "metallic" touch that all icons had in those days. Fashion things.

MIUI 2, step by step

A few months later, on the same version of the Android OS, this iteration landed with basic redesigns. It did not change the rules of the game but it justified many investors turning Xiaomi into the trendy tech.

Because the masterpiece was hidden in a certain "Xiaomi One", the first smartphone that would arrive in August 2011 and which would be followed by a tablet, a WiFi router and the first smartTV.

MIUI 3: the same but better?

The key is called MiTalk. Launched in November 2010, this was the messaging app with which Xiaomi wanted to change the rules of instant communication. And it was not bad - in 2014 it reached the figure of 70 million users -. MiTalk became the main source of income for the brand.

However, this iteration of MIUI (on Android 2.3.6) hardly raises new icons more similar to iOS. The "core" remains the same.

MIUI 4, the first leap forward

Now, on Android 4.0.4, this new version of MIUI adds antivirus for the first time and a handful of improvements in transparency, such as the famous app certificates.

The new animations in the unlocking or the display of the weather application showed that the brand was also flirtatious: Xiaomi showed sensibilities in the aesthetic facet, not only in practice.

MIUI 5, without Google there is no paradise

MIUi 5

What a schism. On March 1, 2013, on Android 4.1.2, the new version of MIUI was released with a renewed interface and with icons that, it could be said, remain almost unchanged until today. This is the way of saying "we are firmly committed to what we have created". In this small thread of the Mi Community you can see the enormous aesthetic leap.

Google services, however, disappeared in the Chinese version. In return, the native apps were translated and adapted to the global market. The ROM polished hundreds of small roughnesses such as the time it took to run some apps, the time to check calls from unknown numbers, optimization in the camera flash, automatic hiding of notifications ...

MIUI 6, ethics and aesthetics

On August 29, 2014, on Android 4.4.2, this lukewarm version was launched that sought to correct, increase and consolidate ... at the expense of iOS, that rival to look at .

And it achieves it: more minimal, visual, easier to use in line with the English-speaking sensitivity, MIUI 6 presented new gesture controls, a renewed music app , improvements in alarm management and much more.

MIUI 7: faster, more agile

We are getting closer to today. Well, not really: on July 13, 2015, on Android 4.4.2 (up to Android 6.0.1, of course), this new version of MIUI would arrive with improvements in loading and compilation. Autonomy and performance were the main focuses.

However, the most notable improvements, which our team still remembers, are others: Opera Max's Data Saver guaranteed up to 50% savings in data rates when browsing the internet. And beware, My Drop was great for sending files over Wi-Fi. We also find a revised camera app, with the possibility of post-editing the text on a photo and, once again, the icons were stylized a little more. Oh, and we can't forget about MUSE, that tool to create our own themes .

MIUI 8: digitization and autonomy

Again we are going to summer , this time to June 16, 2016, although in Spain we could not savor it until August - a constant that would be a tradition for a few more years.

Created on Android 6.0 (Marshmallow), MIUI 8 adds the "second space", the possibility of creating up to two different desktops (with their own access codes) and that new skin of a single color (called My Lantint). And even more news would come, such as the automatic compression of the gallery cache, the compatibility with more file formats or that scientific calculator integrated into the system.

MIUI 9, the definitive formula?

We traveled to August 10, 2017. Some arrive and others leave. The Kids Mode changes to a more generic "safe mode", in addition to deleting apps from the Chinese ROM like WiWide or Showtime at a stroke .

In return, the "Vault" is added, the silent mode, the improvements in the split screen - something to be appreciated for those then owners of a Mi MIX or Mi Max -, shortcuts to the Mi Remote or Mi Home, a new search assistant picture-by-word , face unlock, gesture shortcuts, and tons of formulas to speed up interaction.

MIUI 10, change everything by pretending not to change anything

Another summer (June 19, 2018) and another system. MIUI 10 arrived under enormous expectation that ended up deflating: too similar to its predecessor, too continuous even with the new integrations with the brand's IoT ecosystem.

And that the company opted for a complete review of the system apps (volume, clock, calendar and notes), a greater integration with XiaoAI for users in China and the obvious improvements in the photographic section, where the AI copied everything and where the bokeh mode was introduced through software along with the new dynamic filters.

MIUI 11: cleans, sweeps and gives splendor

We stopped our train on October 22, 2019 , when COVID was not even a suspicion and we were happily celebrating the Princess of Asturias Awards.

It was then when, on the other side of the world, Xiaomi added to MIUI 11 the long-awaited dark mode - also the monochrome mode to save energy -, button to eradicate ads, smoother animations, new icons, improvements in the calculator or in Notes , management of screenshots with integrated tools, new melodies or the first functions to measure how much time you spend on your mobile . MIUI 11 was a success and even today it must be recognized how well implemented it was.

MIUI 12: who much covers ...

We are already on April 27, 2020, on Android 10 and releasing a new "dark mode 2.0". Added to this, more gestures, a remodeled app drawer, new icons, backgrounds and tones - as is the house brand -, improved privacy, multitasking, premiere in camera filters, new animations in footprints and battery charge, floating windows and new animation engine, "lite" mode ...

With MIUI 12 it was easy to feel overwhelmed . However, this interface, so changed, hid something terrible: it lacked a lot of hours of optimization. Luckily, the correction came and it was then that we learned to value even more the achievements achieved by Xiaomi in 12.0.

MIUI 12.5, correcting the urgent

This we did not expect. But we did need it. On December 28, 2020, on Android 10, MIUI 12.5 landed.

And this second layer amended MIUI 12 through optimization, code refinement, bug fixes and a handful of very juicy improvements in the later called Enhanced Edition : new super wallpapers, the ability to measure heart rate using the camera sensor. , Virtual ROM , redesigned folders, new alarms (the already iconic natural sounds), access to "recent", improvements in fast loading and a long etcetera.

MIUI 13: a great giant leap

{"videoId":"x85azp7","autoplay":true,"title":"MIUI 13 es INMINENTE esto es TODO lo que SABEMOS"}

The true history of Xiaomi is written through the innovations in MIUI. His story of ambition and technological projection can be perfectly read through that department called Xiaomi Tech that today is one of the three key bastions of the company .

We do not know if the key date will be December 28, 2021 - we do know, at least, that this new customization layer lands on Android 11-12 - but we do know that MIUI 13 has been delayed up to six months with the aim to be the best possible version of himself. And we are looking forward to testing it.

(function() { window._JS_MODULES = window._JS_MODULES || {}; var headElement = document.getElementsByTagName( head )[0]; if (_JS_MODULES.instagram) { var instagramScript = document.createElement( script ); instagramScript.src = ; instagramScript.async = true; instagramScript.defer = true; headElement.appendChild(instagramScript); } })();
