New Macs: Apple s secret chip plans exposed

So far, Apple has used three of its own chips for the current generation of MacBooks, iMacs and Mac minis. The development does not stand still, because now the plans for the coming generations of the Mac chips are public. What can we expect and when can we expect it?

New Macs with Apple's M2 from 2022

A new report from insider Wayne Ma gives us an overview of Apple's chip plans for the next few years. Special mention is made of the new in-house processors for the upcoming Macs (source: The Information).

Apple's chip partner TSMC currently manufactures the M1, M1 Pro and M1 Max using the 5 nm production process. The next generation, which we can probably expect next year, will still be produced using the 5 nm process, albeit in a further developed version. The chips will apparently contain two so-called "dies" , which will ultimately enable more cores to be integrated. We'll see the chips in new models of the MacBook Pro and other Mac desktops, the report said.

The two latest chips (M1 Pro and M1 Max) work in the new MacBook Pro - you can see it in the video :

From 2023 there will be even more "nuclear power"

Apple would like to take a significantly larger step in 2023, when the manufacturing process is to be converted to 3 nanometers . We remember, thanks to the advancing miniaturization, the chips are getting faster and, above all, more efficient, so they require less energy for the corresponding performance.

According to the report, the new chips - code names Ibiza, Lobos and Palma - in the once again scaled-down manufacturing process will make it possible to integrate up to 40 computing cores . For comparison: Apple's M1 currently works with 8 cores, the M1 Pro and M1 Max with 10 cores. The record holder is currently still the Mac Pro with Intel's Xeon CPUs, which contain up to 28 cores. We will see this chip first in the more expensive models (MacBook Pro etc.), but a cheaper variant, for example for the MacBook Air, is also expected to come.

The Mac Pro has so far managed to get by without an Apple chip. According to the plans, it will initially be equipped with a variant of the M1 Max , which should have at least two "dies". In all likelihood, Apple will present the computer to us next year.
