Huawei s comeback: How the tech giant could shape the future

The dead live longer - there is hardly a company that applies the old adage better than Huawei. Already written off by many in 2021, the breathtaking comeback of the Chinese begins shortly afterwards. Time to look back into the future.

Sometimes life plays strange pranks, that applies to people and companies alike. Former US President Donald Trump almost sealed the fate of the Chinese electronics giant Huawei with the swipe of a finger, but laid the foundation for its rise to become the most valuable electronics company in the world. So what could be more obvious than today, May 15, 2042, to take a look back at the eventful history of Huawei, with all its ups and downs?

Future theme week at xiaomist

Yes, this is a post about the year 2042. No, you haven't made a journey through time. This contribution belongs to the theme week "The Future in 2042" on xiaomist, in which we will turn our millennium by 21 years and show you what the tech and gaming world could look like in 2042.

You can find all contributions from this topic week in our special on the year 2042.

2019 : US President Donald Trump puts Huawei on the so-called "black list" on May 15. From now on, it is no longer possible for Huawei to trade with US companies.

2021 : In just two years, Huawei has seen an unprecedented crash . The smartphones of the Chinese, which were real box office hits before the sanctions, are now like lead on the shelves - without key components from US companies and Google apps, the devices cannot keep up with those of the competition. Huawei's market share in Europe is less than 2 percent and support in the home market is also crumbling. Doubts are being raised as to whether Huawei still has a future as a smartphone manufacturer.

2022 : After the Chinese Communist Party cracked down on the proliferation of the domestic tech sector, an extraordinary people's congress will be convened on May 15. There President Xi Jinping presented his "Red Dragon" offensive . Five hand-picked technology groups are to be built up and expanded to become "national champions" and make the People's Republic the technology leader. You will receive an interest-free loan of the equivalent of 500 billion euros and extensive special rights. Huawei belongs to the five-man club and is responsible for software and hardware.

What else could have happened in 2042, we show you in the special edition of our xiaomist headlines:

Competitor for Android and iOS: Huawei's new operating system

2024 : At Beijing's behest, all Chinese smartphone manufacturers have to switch to the new "FuxiOS" that is being developed by Huawei. The successor to HarmonyOS suddenly becomes the most widely used mobile operating system in the world . In less than 24 months, FuxiOS, whose name pays homage to the first Chinese great emperor, can close the app gap to Android and iOS. Even Google is gritting its teeth to bring its apps to FuxiOS so as not to jeopardize its own advertising income.

2026 : After tough negotiations, the USA and China sign a new free trade agreement. US President Ron DeSantis removes Huawei from the "black list".

2027 : FuxiOS 2.0 is introduced. In addition to smartphones and tablets, the operating system now also runs on a range of household appliances - from ovens to toothbrushes. FuxiOS 2.0 is supposed to "connect the world" , as Huawei manager Richard Yu proudly proclaims.

2028 : At the age of 84, Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei finally retires from the group. On his farewell, President Xi Zhengfei honors him as a "great Chinese" who has rendered outstanding services to the party and the fatherland. The new Huawei CEO will be Meng Wanzhou, the daughter of Ren Zhengfei, who was previously responsible for the group's finances.

Smart contact lenses: Huawei tops Apple

2029 : Huawei is ahead of Apple and presents intelligent contact lenses: The "Huawei Lenses", as they are called, project an image directly into the eye . The contact lenses have a battery life of 2 days and run on an adapted variant of FuxiOS.

2030 : Against the bitter resistance of the unions, Huawei takes over the traditional German company Siemens. The purchase price is 120 billion euros. Huawei wants to position itself better in the field of household appliances and medical technology and benefit from the know-how of the Germans. In future, the products will be sold under the label "Siemens powered by Huawei" and run on FuxiOS.

2032 : After years of research and even before TSMC and Intel, Huawei's processor manufacturer HiSilicon presents the first 1-nanometer processor . The chip, which is only a third the size of a postage stamp, contains over 500 billion transistors and a new, three-dimensional NPU for AI tasks. On the tenth anniversary of the "Red Dragon" offensive, Huawei achieved its goal and made the People's Republic the technology leader in semiconductor technology. The chip is named "Zhengfei-1" in honor of the legendary company founder.

2033 : Huawei users vent their anger on social media under the hashtag #HuaSpy. A software bug in the new FuxiOS 6 causes data from millions of people to end up online, including sensitive recordings from the new Huawei Lenses 2 . Huawei boss Meng Wanzhou has to answer questions in front of the US Congress and the data protection committee of the European Federation.

Tesla Cybertruck

The new number 1: Huawei replaces Tesla

2034 : Huawei goes public. Despite the data protection scandal of the previous year, there is a real run on the share. Within a few hours, the output value increases tenfold to 2,340 euros. Huawei is displacing Tesla from the top of the world's most valuable companies.

2036 : FuxiOS 7.0 is introduced. The most important innovation is "Huawei Protect" - an intelligent data protection assistant based on a further development of the three-dimensional NPU from the Zhengfei-1 chip. All incoming and outgoing data traffic is monitored and compared with the behavior of the user . Huawei wants to regain lost trust. Critics accuse Huawei of wanting the transparent user.

2038 : Huawei puts the world's first commercial 7G network into operation. The 150 million people in the Chinese province of Guangdong are the first to be able to download data at speeds of up to 5 Tbps . Huawei's decades of experience as a network equipment provider come into play here. The new Huawei Lenses 3 in particular benefit from the high-speed network and enable immersion in a realistic virtual world that was previously only known from well-known science fiction classics such as Star Trek.

2040 : Facebook mother Meta and Huawei announce a momentous cooperation. The US group is withdrawing from the People's Republic with its Metaverse and leaving the lucrative virtual reality market to Huawei . In return, Facebook gets access to Huawei Lenses technology outside of China.

2042 : With 700,000 employees worldwide and annual sales of 3.6 trillion euros, Huawei is the most valuable company in the world. In China there are more and more voices calling for it to be broken up . The rulers in Beijing are still keeping a low profile. Too many citizens hold Huawei shares, any action against the company would depress the market value and thus incite the anger of the people. First of all, the Cartel Office, headed by the new head of the authorities, Hao Zhang, should end its investigations. According to Zhang, the results will be published next spring. Probably sometime in mid-May.
