WhatsApp has now added its announced end-to-end encryption in the cloud backups on both Android and iOS. While WhatsApp itself has been end-to-end encrypted by default for five years, the backups have not yet been encrypted if you have saved your chats in Google Drive or iCloud.
Now you can activate end-to-end encryption for your backups. As described by Facebook in its announcement, it seems like it isn't enabled by default, but you have to actively choose to enable it by going to Settings> Chats> Chat Backup> End-to-End Encrypted Backup works.
When you do this, you'll either need to use a password of your choice or a 64-digit encryption key that only you know. Once all of this is set up, WhatsApp, Google or Apple will not be able to read the backups without the key or password.
Facebook points out that WhatsApp is the only global messaging service that offers this level of security to this extent. The new feature, which enables end-to-end encryption of backups, is gradually being distributed to everyone.
