{Disarmed} OnePlus releases OxygenOS 12 Open Beta for OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro

OnePlus OxygenOS 12 Open Beta

The OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro have already received a few Android 12 developer preview builds in the past few months. As of today, the first OxygenOS 12 Open Beta based on the new Androdi 12 is available for both models.

Google may be obsessed with its new Material You redesign, but OnePlus has a different philosophy: "Burdenless Design". Continuing the visual changes added with last year's update, OxygenOS 12 focuses on the use of lights and shadows throughout the user interface. Nowhere is this more evident than in the redesigned shelf, which now has a tile-based layout to bundle additional information in a single area. Each widget and app group now uses a drop shadow, which gives OnePlus' previously flat user interface additional dimensionality.

All OxygenOS icons have also been updated, both in the menus and on the home screen. OnePlus takes advantage of "new morphism" to achieve its new look and essentially offers a re-launch of the skeuomorphism trend that died out in the last decade. What was once old is new again, and that has never been as true as it is here. The integrated file browser, for example, has a tab icon again, while the settings menu shines in new splendor.

OnePlus isn't just focusing on design with OxygenOS 12 - the platform is also getting some long-awaited changes to certain features. The dark mode, for example, now offers three different variants, ranging from the lighter "Gentle" to the completely black "Enhanced". The Notes app has been completely redesigned and now offers new formatting options and doodle modes, as well as a new look that matches the color gradient user interface. Finally, Private Safe offers a vault for all compromised documents, photos and videos that you have stored on your device.

OxygenOS 12 also brings some new "2.0" upgrades to services that were introduced last year. Work-life balance is now available worldwide and allows users to choose different apps and notification settings based on their location and working hours. OnePlus' Games Toolbox now includes a voice modulator for voice chat in five different mobile games, and Canvas AOD has new brushes and line colors.
