{Disarmed} Nokia Streaming Box 8000 review

Nokia Streaming Box 8000

I have now received the Nokia Streaming Box 8000 from StreamView for testing. The company from Vienna markets smart TVs, set-top boxes and DAB + radios from the manufacturer from Finland in Europe. The Streaming Box is particularly interesting because it offers many exciting functions for EUR 89.90.

So far I had connected a Blu-Ray player, the Google Chromecast and an Amazon Fire TV stick to my LG TV, which was already getting on in years. But since I only have 2 HDMI inputs, the latter always had to be addressed via a switch. But with the Nokia Streaming Box 8000 this has come to an end, one connection for everything now replaces the Chromecast and Fire TV.

scope of delivery

In addition to the streaming box, the packaging also contains the matching Bluetooth remote control, an HDMI cable, as well as a power supply unit and batteries for the remote control. Plus a little bit of paperwork that you don't really need.

Design, workmanship & connections

The box has the dimensions 112 x 112 x 24 mm and weighs 250 g. It comes in classic black, with the Nokia logo on the top. On the front there is an LED as an operating indicator. But it gets really exciting on the back. The box is typically processed, there is nothing to complain about. The only time when you will hold the box in your hands is when setting it up, after that you only use the remote control.

Back to the back of the Nokia Streaming Box 8000. There are tons of connections there. The box is connected to the television using the HDMI connection. There is also a socket for a LAN cable, two different USB ports (USB-C and USB-A - on the side) and you have an analog AV output and an optical audio connection for audio output. A Chromecast is also built in, so you actually have everything you need to stream.

The USB ports can also be used to connect external storage media such as USB sticks or external hard drives and then use them to play files.

The Bluetooth remote control is unusually large for a streaming box, in principle it is a classic TV remote control. The keys are illuminated so that you can always find the right key in the dark. With Amazon Prime Video, Disney +, Netflix and YouTube, the most important streaming services are already represented with their own button on the remote control. There is also a Google Assistant button under the volume button. A microphone is also built in at the top.

Facility

After you have connected the Nokia Streaming Box 8000 to the television via an HDMI cable and supplied it with power using the power adapter, you can start working. But then you need a little patience. Because the first thing was a very big update, more than 700 MB were downloaded and installed at the start.

In any case, it felt like an eternity for me. But it could be due to the network, which was maybe quite full at the moment. Then it really starts, and it still feels like it takes a long time. Especially when setting up using a smartphone. It was probably not a good decision, because I was not really moving forward, but I had chosen because the corresponding configuration was already stored in the corresponding WiFi network on the smartphone. I then canceled.

So all over again - set up a Google account and then it really starts. But you can also use the box without a Google account, but then it's not that convenient. Then after setting the WiFi it was faster than before and after a few minutes the start screen was visible.

service

And then it's really fun. So you saved your Amazon account and you were already logged into the preinstalled Amazon Prime Video app. No more comparison to the sluggish Fire TV stick. YouTube is also quickly accessed. I don't have Netflix or Disney +, but it's probably set up that quickly too.

Operation by the apps works smoothly with the remote control. Everything is really extremely fast, you just "rush" through the menus, settings and apps. It's really fun. Especially because everything is in one box, you don't have to connect a thousand sticks or the like to your television.

The Google Assistant can also be used without any problems and is one of the best on the market. You are understood, just as you know it from the Google smartphone. Another plus point when it comes to operation. Which is also fun with the remote control. Even if this could have been smaller.

Thanks to the Google Play Store, you can continue to download and install apps. Joyn, Zattoo, Waipu, MagentaTV or Spotify are also available. You can even install other interfaces, Kodi should be mentioned or even Chromecast Android apps can then be installed on the Nokia Streaming Box 8000.

Conclusion

After testing it for almost 2 weeks, I am pleasantly surprised by the Nokia Streaming Box 8000. With a RRP of EUR 89.90 it is not exactly cheap, but it offers everything you would expect from a modern streaming box. There is a suitable connection for everything, 4K playback and Dolby Digital Plus are also on board (if playback on the TV is supported).

Thanks to Android TV with Android 10 and Google Play Store, you also have a huge range of apps on offer. The very fast system is fun and special features such as the built-in Chromecast make the box a hit. Overall, the Nokia streaming box is convincing.
