{Disarmed} Google will offer five years of software support starting with the Pixel 6
Samsung was the first Android manufacturer to announce four years of software update support for its smartphones. OnePlus, Oppo and Xiaomi followed suit and now offer software support for some of their smartphones for four years. Google has now decided to offer the longest software update support in the Android sector.
The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will be the first smartphones from Google to offer five years of software support. The information comes from the big Pixel 6 leak from Carphone Warehouse over the weekend.
In the software section on the product page, it says: "The Pixel is shipped with at least 5 years of updates, so it will become more and more secure over time." However, the terms and conditions on the website mention "Android security updates" likely means the devices will receive Android operating system updates for 3-4 years and additional security updates for 1-2 years.
That's a year longer than what Samsung is promising for some of its mid-range and all high-end smartphones. Things are definitely moving in the right direction, but Apple is releasing 5-6 major operating system updates for all of its smartphones. And this should also be the goal of Google.
