{Disarmed} Xiaomi is now a member of the Open Invention Network
Xiaomi is now a member of the Open Invention Network. This is unlikely to be known to the fewest people. This is an industrial consortium founded in 2005 by IBM, NEC, Novell, Philips, Red Hat and Sony, which purchases patents and makes them available to others.
Xiaomi doesn't just make smartphones. The Chinese manufacturer is very active in many areas, recently also with e-cars . But back to the Open Invention Network. In addition to the founding members, this now also includes Oracle, The Document Foundation, Microsoft and Google.
You buy patents, but then make them available to others. The only condition here is that these may not assert any patent claims against the free and open source operating system GNU / Linux, or against any other software that is related to Linux.
Presumably there will be a diligent exchange of patents in the background that could be necessary for research and development.
