According to a new report from Zimperian Labs, a malicious Trojan horse that researchers called "GriftHorse" was used in a mobile campaign that the report said was classified as "aggressive". More than 10 million Android users from over 70 countries fell victim to a scam that subscribed to innocent-looking apps that, without their knowledge, billed them around $ 42 a month.

More than 200 apps from categories such as tools, entertainment, dating and more were involved in the scam. This created a widely ramified network that made it easier to catch the victims. One particular app, Handy Translator Pro, has been installed over 500,000 times. The scam goes back to November 2020. The ripped off Android users lived in different countries like Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.

In their report, Zimperium researchers Aazim Yaswant and Nipun Gupta write: "While typical premium service scams exploit phishing techniques, this particular global scam has been hiding behind malicious Android applications that act as Trojans and enable the interactions to use the user for an increased spread and infection. "

The apps seemed innocuous from reading their descriptions and the requested permissions, but as the report found, "That false sense of confidence changes when users are billed for the premium service month after month," which they have subscribed to without their knowledge and consent. "

The malicious apps were listed in the Google Play Store and third-party app stores. Zimperian shared the results of his investigation with Google and the apps were removed from the Play Store. However, the apps can still be found in third-party unsecured Android app stores.

Victims whose devices were infected with the malicious apps received several warnings that they had won a prize and should claim it immediately. The pop-up windows continued to appear five times an hour until the user finally gave in and accepted the price. The victim was then redirected to a website asking for his phone number. It was a contract for an SMS service that costs the equivalent of $ 35 per month.

Not only would it take the user months to realize that he / she was scammed, but there is also no way to get a refund. The report states: "Overall, the GriftHorse Android Trojan exploits small screens, local trust, and misinformation to trick users into downloading and installing these Android Trojans, as well as frustration or curiosity in accepting the fake free price that is offered on their notification screens. "
