{Disarmed} Insanity! Samsung wants to develop a 576 MP camera sensor by 2025
Samsung launched the world's first series-produced 108 MP camera sensor for smartphones in 2020. Last week, the company presented the ISOCELL HP1, the world's first 200 MP camera sensor for smartphones. But that should not end there.
Samsung revealed last year that it wants to develop a 600 MP camera sensor , but it will have to wait a while for its release. It will take a while. But now there is a kind of roadmap for it.
Haechang Lee, Senior VP Automotive Sensor, Samsung Electronics, used an interesting graphic during his presentation at the SEMI Europe Summit. This shows an overview of the development of the pixel size and resolution of camera sensors since the year 2000.
There you can see that the South Korean company plans to launch a 576 MP camera sensor in 2025. However, this sensor may not be used in smartphones. Instead, it appears that Samsung's upcoming 576 MP camera sensor will be developed for automobiles.
The Samsung website mentioned earlier that the human eyes can reach around 500MP resolution, and the company wants to go beyond that. With its 576 MP sensor it could do this feat, but that doesn't necessarily mean it is suitable for smartphones. Instead, such sensors could be used in autonomous vehicles, drones and medical devices. Autonomous vehicles would also need extremely powerful chips to process the images and videos that come from such a high-resolution sensor.
