{Disarmed} 200 megapixels: Samsung introduces the highest resolution sensor for mobile phones to date, the ISOCELL HP1
In the last two years the mega-pixel war seems to have been stoked by some manufacturers, seeing that even in the most modest mid-range sensors of even 108 megapixels are opted for. Thus, although more is not always better, the increase in resolution is still something to be sought, and Samsung now presents a 200 megapixel sensor for mobile phones.
This is the highest resolution that has been achieved in a mobile sensor and it is something that other manufacturers had prepared for, seeing that Qualcomm's more ambitious processors (such as the Snapdragon 888 ) already support this resolution. The brand has opted for those 0.64 micrometer pixels that we already saw in the Samsung ISOCELL JN1 , although in that case the resolution was 50 megapixels.
Two new sensors, one of them to gain in resolution
The Samsung ISOCELL HP1 is the most prominent sensor of these two new sensors. As we have said, it has 200 megapixels (with pixels of 0.64 μm) and, by means of pixel binning , you can photos of various sizes).
In xiaomist.com The phones with the best camera that we have analyzed in recent months (2021)This is because what this sensor also debuts is its own pixel binning technology: ChameleonCell . A name given by the main characteristic of this novelty: that the grouping of pixels will depend on the environment , so that according to this the system will group in 2x2 pixels (giving 50 megapixel photos), 4x4 (giving 12.5 megapixel photos) or without grouping, thus taking 200 megapixel snapshots.
With this, the manufacturer seeks to improve mainly in two aspects: a higher resolution that allows giving more detailed photographs even when cropping and that in low lighting conditions the grouped pixels are able to capture a greater amount of light and thus give better photographs. It remains to be seen here if those huge (groups of) 2.56 μm pixels that remain when grouping 16 pixels achieve that differential result in low light, while the 200 megapixels would remain for situations with more lighting.
The ISOCELL HP1 also has the capacity to record videos in 8K resolution at 30 frames per second, where pixel binning is also applied and so it is shot at 50 megapixels ((7,680 x 4,320 pixels) and that, as they explain, there is not too much loss in The field of view This 8K video resolution has already been seen in high-end mobile phones of the brand, such as the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra .
The other sensor introduced today is the Samsung ISOCELL GN5 . A sensor that takes the baton from the ISOCELL GN2 and becomes the first sensor with 1 μm pixels with a new solution for focusing: Dual Pixel Pro. A tool that takes the previous Dual Pixel further and promises an automatic focus Instantaneous by being able to recognize changes in patterns in all directions, as promised by the manufacturer.
When and on which mobiles will we see these two sensors ? Samsung does not tell us that succulent detail, but for some time there has been talk of a 200 megapixel sensor for some of the Samsung Galaxy S22 , so this fits like a glove to this and also in a future Xiaomi mobile with this sensor . We will be waiting for their incorporation in future smartphones and, above all, to be able to test them.
