Certain iPhones with iOS 15 are now safer on the go
Sure, iOS 15 brings many new functions to iPhone users, but security is not neglected either. Especially users of certain iPhone models are now better protected again.
Aside from new functions and features, Apple is of course also closing a number of potential security gaps with the update to iOS 15 and iPadOS 15. Apple explicitly mentions a vulnerability in the accompanying "package insert" (source: Apple).
iPhones with Face-ID: iOS 15 eliminates security gap
So it would have been possible so far to outsmart the face recognition "Face ID" on the iPhone quite easily . It would have needed a constructed 3D model of a head that looks like the owner of the iPhone. Prepared in this way, Face ID could probably be bypassed and the iPhone unlocked and authenticated. With iOS 15, according to Apple, this very specific problem was ultimately resolved by improving the Face ID function.
The vulnerability affects iPhones and iPads with Face ID, specifically:
iPhone X iPhone XR iPhone XS (all models) iPhone 11 (all models) iPhone 12 (all models) iPad Pro (11-inch) and iPad Pro (3rd generation)Those iPhones and iPads are now safer again. However, users of other models are also recommended to use the update; with iOS 15, they will of course also receive the corresponding security updates. For example, security problems with the preferences, Siri, WebKit and the WiFi have been fixed.
You can see one of the many great features of iOS 15 here in the video :
Apple makes it possible: security updates for the predecessor
But what if you prefer to continue using iOS 14? In principle, this should now be possible. Apple promises to continue to offer security updates for the older system - so the customer has the choice. It can be assumed that there will be something more to come from Apple in this regard.
