Android 12: Activate one-handed mode - that s how it works

Android 12 comes with a one-handed mode that can make large cell phones much easier to use. However, it has to be activated first because not everyone needs it. xiaomist shows you how to activate and configure the Android 12 one-handed mode and how you can turn on a button if the swiping gesture causes problems.

The one-handed mode in Android 12 is an aid for all those who have a large display but only have one hand free: With a swiping gesture (or optionally a small button on the edge of the screen), the upper half of the current window is simply pulled down. At the same time, the lower half disappears from the picture. This allows you, for example, to tap apps that are in the upper half and that you would otherwise not be able to reach with your thumb.

Android 12 brings a lot of new things:

Activate one-handed mode: Android 12 settings

To use the one-handed mode in Android 12, swipe the home button down with a finger or thumb. Alternatively, you can activate a small "switch", the so-called "link for one-handed mode" and position it at any height on the right or left edge of the screen. It is then used to switch the mode on or off.

To activate one-handed mode:

Opens the " Settings app ". Scroll all the way down and tap on " System ". Opens the " Gestures and movements " menu in the next window with one tap. Scroll down to " One-handed mode" and tap on it to configure it. Activate the " Use one-handed mode " switch and, if necessary, the " Pull display down " option underneath . If you prefer to use the small switch instead of the swiping gesture, then activate the button "Link for one-handed mode" below.

You can position the small switch on the right or left on the edge of the display and slide it up or down with your finger.

Resolution: One-handed mode cannot be activated

If you want to activate the one-handed mode, but the corresponding switch is grayed out, this is due to a different setting. So you can either change this setting, or you decide to use the "one-handed mode button".

The problem is this:

Under " Settings " → " System " → " Gestures and movements " under " System control " you have the option to switch between 3 different types of operation :

Operation via gestures - with just a small home button.Operation via 2 buttons - only home button and back.Operation via 3 buttons - home button, back and app change

The first two options do not cause any problems, but if you choose the old-fashioned 3-button solution, you cannot activate the one-handed mode normally, nor can you use an activated mode. This is because the home button is only a "movable" button in the first two modes that you can still pull in different directions.

You can activate a greyed out one-handed mode in 2 ways:

You switch the type of operation to the option with gestures or 2 buttons. You activate the option "Shortcut for one-handed mode" at the bottom of the one-handed mode window in order to activate it in the future with a small, permanently visible button.

The methods will definitely work, even if you use a different launcher and 3 buttons.
