Project Latte: Microsoft brings Android apps to Windows 10

Microsoft is working on a software solution that would enable application developers to bring their Android applications to Windows 10 with little to no code changes -

The Android apps should be packaged as MSIX and the developers could submit them to the Microsoft Store. The project is code-named "Latte" and will appear next year.

Microsoft has toyed with the idea of ​​bringing Android apps to Windows 10 before, through a project codenamed Astoria that never saw the light of day. The Latte project will likely be based on the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). However, Microsoft will have to provide its own Android subsystem in order for Android applications to actually run.

Microsoft has announced that the WSL will soon have support for GUI Linux applications as well as GPU acceleration, which should support the performance of applications running on the WSL.

It is unlikely that Project Latte will include support for the Play Services as Google will not allow Play Services to be installed on non-native Android devices and Chrome OS.

Even today, users can run Android apps on their PCs via app streaming using the Your Phone app integrated in Windows 10. However, this is only limited to a handful of Samsung devices.

Microsoft has made it clear in recent years that it no longer regards native Windows applications as the be-all and end-all when it comes to developing applications on the platform. Microsoft is now welcoming many app platforms, including PWA, UWP, Win32, Linux (via WSL) and soon also Android apps.

Assuming Microsoft doesn't roll back its plans with Project Latte, the rollout of Android applications on Windows 10 will make it a near-universal operating system when it comes to application support. Microsoft hopes to announce Project Latte next year and could ship as part of the Windows 10 release in fall 2021.
