It did. I, an unrepentant console, thought for a long time to return to PC gaming. For 2.46 thousand. PLN we will buy a graphics card that makes the power of the Xbox or PlayStation GPU seem ridiculous. Although, of course, comparing these platforms is not that simple.

And they are. GeForce graphics chips from the 3xxx line. Yesterday, Marcin bravely covered Nvidia's announcements live, for details I refer you to his material . The heroine of the conference was, of course, the RTX 3090 card, for which we will pay a modest 7,000. PLN. Well, this is a flagship product that almost no one will buy - apart from enthusiasts.

In my opinion, the right flagship of GeForce is invariably x080, so in the case of the recently announced new generation, the RTX 3080 chip. For a reference card with such a GPU we will pay less than 3.3 thousand. PLN. There is also an economic version, so the RTX 3070. This one costs 2.36 thousand. PLN.

Expensive? For sure. Moreover, these prices will not fall soon. I quickly checked the prices of cards from the 2xxx line on Ceneo and Amazon - they did not budge. I am convinced that this will change soon. However, this also makes it possible to believe that the RTX 3xxx prices will be retained until the launch of a next generation Nvidia GPU.

How are the PC from GeForce RTX 3000 to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series ?

We already know almost for sure that all the 8K gaming and ray tracing on the new consoles is a bit of a bluff - although it looks like at least some Xbox Series and PS5 games will actually hit 120fps. The power of the new consoles will mainly allow you to play in 4K quality at 60 fps with high image detail, the so-called details . And ray tracing? Residual on PS5, probably used mainly for small decorative elements. The Xbox Series X is a bit better in this respect - but very little.

The graphics system is of course only part of the total computing power of the PC and console. So let's not make a common mistake and assume that the graphics performance measured in TFLOPS determines the full capabilities of the gaming hardware. The PS5 and Xbox Series are also a huge leap in the central processing unit (CPU) and storage. In addition, the rigid software and hardware configuration allow game developers to perform low-level, far-reaching optimizations, impossible on PCs.

We call this leap in CPU performance in next-gen consoles a huge one, because we pair the PS5 and Xbox Series with PS4 and Xbox One. The current generation of Sony, Microsoft and AMD are equipped with a pitifully weak Jaguar processor. It's hard to say what drove the engineers of these companies - I'm guessing problems with cooling or the desire to maintain energy efficiency. The switch to the Zen 2 CPU in the new consoles will therefore be very noticeable for console players . Owners of modern Core i7 or Ryzen 7 systems will shrug their shoulders - not to mention enthusiasts with an even faster CPU.

PS5 (above) and Xbox Series will offer a completely new, high-performance memory architecture

However, there is one more console innovation that is only just starting to hit PCs. It is a revised memory architecture that provides dedicated processors for data I / O and a direct connection between the memory and the graphics chip, without the need for other chips. This innovation will only hit PCs, at least the mainstream ones. But ... is slowly starting to hit. Price? Well, the producers of both consoles are currently playing the stupidest freak game I've ever seen. We do not know how much the new Xboxes and PlayStation will cost. Apparently, this time it is supposed to be expensive. It seems highly doubtful that the Xbox Series S would be cheaper than 2,000. PLN, Xbox Series X and PS5 cheaper than PLN 2999. Well, this is just speculation - it is difficult to compare the prices of the new GeForce's with consoles, the cost of which we do not know.

In addition, such a comparison will look a bit different for each player. If I were to buy a PC for games, I would have to buy basically all components and spend many thousands of zlotys. But most gamers who constantly play on their PC will not list everything - just ordering a new GeForce to get a graphical kick.

Okay, but we can compare the technical possibilities. Well ... after the consoles there is nothing to collect. Yet they haven't even entered the market yet.

The RDNA2 graphics architecture used in future consoles is a very successful answer to the GeForce RTX 2000. We do not know yet if and to what extent it will surpass it, but the new consoles will certainly offer high-level graphics capabilities. However, the RTX 3000 is a new hand. It is not uncommon that, as a result, the new generation of graphics cards provides a dozen or so percent increase in performance - at the same time high prices. Not this time.

Richard Leadbetter was one of the first journalists in the world to receive the RTX 3080 reference card for testing. I chose him because he is a journalist with an exceptionally broad knowledge related to gaming technology. He is one of my authorities, I trust him and the rest of the Digital Foundry editorial team almost completely, and I am not alone in this. The same Leadbetter claims in the material below that he does not remember such a generational leap in the history of the industry.

First, preliminary test of the RTX 3080

The journalist researched the games Doom Eternal, Control, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Battlefield V, Borderlands 3 and Quake II (path tracing version). He did not experience twice the efficiency, which was mentioned at the conference and which few believed. However, there was not much left: games made to the maximum in terms of 4K resolution, image detail and the detail of tracking techniques worked at the level of 160 to 190 percent. the efficiency of the RTX 2080. The most common one was about 1.8 times the efficiency. And yet the new consoles will most likely offer us something a bit better than the 2080. Or something similar - it's hard to say. But almost certainly not at the RTX 3080 or even 3070 level.

Sweeped? No, of course not. The problem is that we will be stuck with the PS5 and Xbox Series hardware configuration for a few years.

In the introduction to this text, I admitted that for a moment I was seriously considering returning to PC gaming after more than a decade. However, I quickly gave up this idea - I remembered why I stopped using the computer as a gaming device. There are many reasons, but they are very subjective. My main point is that in the case of playing on consoles, the burden of tuning the game for the hardware falls on the engineers who create the game - and not on me, the player.

However, that doesn't change the fact that Nvidia has launched the next-nextgen video games before the next-gen. I have no doubt that AMD will respond to the competitor's challenge. I am convinced that it will not be long until the release of the new Radeons, slightly better or slightly worse than the RTX 3000.

For now, however, the PS5 and Xbox Series, as everything indicates, will provide entertainment at Full HD, 60fps and ray-tracing or UHD at 60fps with residual ray tracing. PC with RTX 3000 ray tracing and 4K at 60 fps will even standardize, often aiming for even higher quality. And surely, at the end of the day, games are the most important anyway - as evidenced by the huge success of the Switch console with a funny Tegra processor in the context of PS and Xbox - but for some reason at least some of us regularly replace the equipment with the better. Because the fluidity and quality of the image are also important. And Nvidia yesterday swept away the competition in almost every respect. The expected high prices of the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will now be a bit more difficult to explain.
