Poles arrange for exemptions from wearing a mask. Then the Minister of Health: there is no such thing as a contraindication to wear

Data provided by the Ministry of Health show a clear increase in the number of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infections. The general loosening of election restrictions, as well as politicians' assurances that "the virus is on the retreat", "the virus is weakening and you do not need to be afraid of it", are starting to have dire consequences.

A short holiday trip to any Polish resort or tourist destination proves that no one remembers about lockdown anymore, no one cares about the whole pandemic anymore. People crowd in queues to tourist attractions without keeping any social distance, and individual masks here and there only look like an exception to the rule.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Łukasz Szumowski reminds that wearing masks is still obligatory, among others in shops or closed rooms. Moreover, according to the minister, there are no diseases that could be a contraindication to covering the mouth and nose.

You should wear masks, cover your nose and mouth. It should be clearly emphasized that there is no such thing as medical contraindications for covering the nose and mouth . If someone has severe respiratory failure, he usually does not go to the store or bus, and if he does, he can always wear a visor. There is no excuse. There should be a fine for the fact that someone does not have a mask or a helmet in a closed room

- Minister Szumowski said on Polsat TV on Friday.

Since April, Poles have been demanding exemptions from the obligation to wear a mask

Asthma, circulatory failure, chronic respiratory failure or finally… steaming glasses are only some of the justifications with which patients report to their doctors with a request for an exemption from wearing a mask.

According to doctors, however, these are not the reasons that automatically entitle to avoid the obligation to cover the mouth and nose. Conversely, if someone suffers from bronchial asthma, it should be treated with medications. If such a person has breathing problems with a mask, it means that they are either poorly treated or they are taking their medications incorrectly. The exception is, in fact, severe asthma attacks or an infectious exacerbation. In such a situation, however, the patient should limit their stay in public spaces and treat themselves temporarily in the comfort of their home.

How long are we going to wear the masks

Nobody is able to answer this question at present. The dynamics of the increase in the number of infected indicates that the coronavirus does not behave like the flu virus and does not disappear during the summer months. More and more voices say that there will be no second wave of contagions, because the first one is not going to end. In such a situation, at least for the time being, until the appropriate drugs and vaccines are developed and introduced into use, the masks may stay with us for longer and it may be worth getting used to.

In a few weeks, when it starts to get colder and, as every year, there is a wave of flu cases, it will be very difficult for us to initially assess whether we are caught by the flu, a common cold or we have contracted the coronavirus. Increased body temperature, cough, headache are the first symptoms common to all these infections, so as part of our social responsibility, we should wear masks just like the people of East Asia, where they are commonly used, especially during infection seasons.
