We anticipated another quantitative drop in smartphone sales this year, but the ongoing pandemic has crushed this market. 20 percent were found buyers. fewer devices than a year ago.
If smartphone manufacturers dreamed of sales increases due to the fledgling 5G networks, they can hide these dreams in a drawer. The coronavirus turned out to be ruthless for the mobile market - in times of the pandemic, when many people lost their jobs and started working remotely, the first necessities were not new smartphones, but laptops and webcams
How has the coronavirus affected smartphone sales?
Gartner reports that in the second quarter of 2020, smartphone sales decreased by 20.4 percent. annually to the level of 295 million units. There is no doubt that the main cause of this state of affairs is the coronavirus, which has resulted in a lockdown in many countries, which has led to the closure of electronics stores and operator showrooms, and to economic problems around the world.
Accessibility itself is only one side of the coin - after all, smartphones can be bought online. However, it cannot be denied that when we leave the house less often, mobile devices do not matter as much as they used to. Many people have certainly understood that their smartphones still work well after a year or two after purchase, and replacing them with a new model is more a whim than a real need.
Who on the mobile market lost more and who lost less?
The coronavirus has hit all manufacturers, but some have lost out more than others from the ongoing crisis. Of the biggest leaders in the industry, Samsung, which was the sales leader in terms of volume, is the worst in the situation, and in the second quarter of 2020 experienced a decrease of 27.1 percent. r./r.
It is interesting that the offer of Samsung, in addition to the flagship models from the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note lines, includes many so-called zetaphones, i.e. mobile phones sold for PLN 1 in subscription. Unfortunately, the sale of the top models has so far not compensated for the decline in the budget segment and there is no guarantee.
Huawei also had significant declines in annual terms, but in his case the matter is not as obvious as in the case of Samsung. The Chinese company is still struggling with the effects of Donald Trump's decision to forbid US companies from doing business with Chinese-based companies, and this also had an impact on the results.

Huawei may have lost year on year, but it has increased its market share anyway.
According to Gartner, Korean Samsung now controls 18.6 percent. the global smartphone market, and Huawei - despite problems in the United States and Europe - is responsible for 18.4 percent. sales. The Chinese company recorded a sales increase of 27.4 percent. on a quarter-to-quarter basis.
The bad situation, however, does not imitate Tim Cook's company, which defies the rules. In the case of Apple, which occupies the premium shelf, which is currently in the third place in the popularity ranking of smartphone companies, the annual decline in Q2 2020 was within the measurement error and amounted to 0.4%.
Due to the fact that Apple is doing its job, the company has managed to significantly increase its market share and escape a bit from rivals. In the list of the five largest producers in the second quarter of 2020, in addition to Samsung, Huawei and Apple, Gartner's data finally includes two more companies from China, i.e. Xiaomi and Oppo, but in their case, we can talk about maintaining the status quo.
The declines by region are also interesting in Gartner's data. It is significant that in China, from which the coronavirus spread to other countries, the market saw a 7% drop (which relatively helped Huawei, which was strong there), while in India, where the lockdown is very restrictive, sales decreased by 46%.
