You won t believe it, players love microtransactions. There is no other explanation for the finances of Electronic Arts

A large and loud part of the gaming community has been harshly criticizing game publishers for years, who go out of their way to earn more for us than just selling licenses. And yet this is clearly a response to demand - the numbers don't lie.

Skins, stickers, extra content, extra costumes, virtual currency… there are many ways to earn further money from a player who has already purchased the game. Almost most large game publishers create additional optional elements for their flagship brands that players can buy for themselves. Often we can also buy virtual currency for the game for real money.

This type of practice has been criticized for years by a large proportion of players who clearly do not want to maximize profits through spending. It is hardly surprising to the critics: some developers are so brazen that they use the approach commonly referred to as pay to win - that is, as long as the player does not invest in the game, he has little chance of winning and having fun. However, there are also situations where add-ons are created only to help players support the creators of their favorite game and which are mainly cosmetic. The general perception of the phenomenon, however, seems to be negative.

I am not surprised that Electronic Arts listens to criticism only to a limited extent. The publishing house prefers to do its own thing and focus on its silent and satisfied customers.

EA has just published its latest investor report. It shows that the company recorded $ 1.46 billion. revenue for the past quarter. And now guess how much of this amount is the proceeds of services, where the service understands both the EA and the EA Access Origin and FIFA Ultimate Team Legends or Apex.

Well, it is $ 1.1 billion. Well over half.

So the player spent much, much more on microtransactions than on the games themselves. They were undoubtedly encouraged to do so, but they were also undoubtedly not forced to do so. It is also hardly surprising that the biggest upcoming EA releases are asking for add-ons to buy, and they will certainly offer it too. The upcoming titles include Star Wars: Squadrons, UFC 4, FIFA 21 and NHL 21.

Other interesting news: Strong position of The Sims 4.

Over 30 million players are playing with The Sims 4. Electronic Arts also noted that 52 percent. the console games he publishes have been digitally acquired. The number of Access and Origin users is also growing, although we have not known the exact numbers.
