The authorities of the Democratic Republic of Congo have just announced a completely new outbreak of the Ebola epidemic. The virus was detected in the western Equatorial Province. Over 1000 kilometers from the second outbreak in the eastern part of the country.
The health minister there, Eteni Longondo , said that in the north-west Ebola had already killed four people residing in the city of Mbandaka - the capital of the Equatorial Province. The situation is quite boring. The second outbreak is less than 600 kilometers from the capital.
The Republic of Congo government says the new Ebola epidemic is under control
- We're dealing with a new epidemic. We will send them the vaccine as well as the medicines very soon, "says Longondo.
Congo is a country that already has a lot of experience in the fight against Ebola. The equatorial province in which the virus was just detected was last affected by Ebola in 2018. 54 cases of infection were detected then, 33 people died, 21 survived.
Since then, the virus decimates the population in the eastern part of the country, in which 2,280 people have died since the outbreak of the epidemic in August 2018. The good news is that if no new case is detected by June 25, the eastern part of Congo will eventually be declared free of Ebola.
The detection of an outbreak of a new epidemic in Mbandaka, when the eastern part of the country was just under control, will certainly not affect the morale of the local population very well. Congolese health services now have to deal with the Ebola, Coronavirus, measles and cholera epidemics.
Fortunately, Ebola is not transmitted by droplet, as SARS-CoV-2 does. Infection occurs through contact with blood or other body fluids, which can be both humans and animals. It is not yet known who was the zero patient in Mbandaka. For the time being WHO is looking at the whole matter and calling for solidarity with the Congo.
Not only COVID-19 wants to kill us. A new Ebola epidemic has been announced in Congo
