No one has ever succeeded in breaking the Google and Apple duopolies in the smartphone market, not even in powers such as Amazon and Microsoft. Now Huawei is trying this art and there are many indications that he can succeed.
With great interest I observe Huaweia's current activities. Partly because I am a fan of the brand and also because we are dealing here with an unprecedented situation. Many years after the end of the US trade war with China, we will talk about how dirty shoes policy has entered the world of new technologies.
I don't have to convince anyone that blocking the possibility of US companies' cooperation with Huawe by Donald Trump is a political matter. The situation is due to the fact that the Chinese are currently leading the way in implementing 5G technology, which will be the driving force of the global economy in the coming years. There is even a paraphrase of a well-known saying in the lobby of the technology industry that says, "Whoever has 5G has power." In turn, Americans are terribly afraid of losing power.
That is why it was decided to attack China. And, consequently, Huaweia.
Huaweia's consumer department got a ricochet here. The case concerns the 5G infrastructure, not the smartphone market. This, however, was enough for Huawei to wake up in a new reality in which it cannot use Google services and must significantly accelerate the creation of its own ecosystem. And he does it extremely well.
Huawei AppGallery is not yet a full competitor of the AppStore and Play Store, but it is on a very good path to becoming one. As a user of Huawei P40 Pro and P40 Lite models, I see that the content of the store is improving from week to week.
In the first place Huawei focused on acquiring local application developers and this art he succeeded. In the store I can see almost all Polish programs I need. Huawei also gives its users a lot of gifts: it's free access to Automapa , it's refund for in-app purchases, it's free access to Tidal, it's a voucher for video content . I could exchange really long.
However, the most important step was the introduction of banking applications to the AppGallery because users complained about the lack of easy installation. This art was also successful, because mBank, IdeaBank and PKO BP have already found their way to the Huaweia store. Soon they will be enriched with Huawei Mobile Services, thanks to which they will be able to operate on smartphones without Google services. Other banks will soon have to implement their applications in the store.
Shortcomings? They are there.
In Huawei AppGallery I miss Google application the most. For most of them, you can find equivalents using the MoreApps service, but a native application from the creator of the service is almost always a better option. Interestingly, Google and Huawei are working on making these programs go to the AppGallery store, as they are available on Apple's AppStor. And this art may actually succeed sometime, unless the US authorities decide that this is a decision that does not comply with applicable law.
The cooperation of Google and Huaweia may, however, take place, because relatively recently the United States has allowed the cooperation of Huaweia and Microsoft, thanks to which the manufacturer's new laptops may have Windows 10 pre-installed. It is also worth remembering that if Google puts its applications in the Huaweia store, probably other American companies, such as Netflix, HBO, Niantic, etc. will soon do it. This could be a milestone in the development of the Huawei ecosystem.
It is also worth admitting that there is disorder in AppGallery. You can find many valuable programs there, but junk applications are among them. However, I am sure that will change over time. It is natural that at the current stage of development the number of applications is more important and the time for their verification and cataloging will come later. Everyone who remembers the beginnings of the Android Market, now known as Google Play, is aware of this.
Why can Huawei succeed in creating a counterweight for Google and Apple?
Because the Chinese know Android perfectly and have sold a huge number of devices working under the control of this system. Huawei also proved that customers want to buy its equipment, and now it has added the ability to convince developers.
First of all, the Chinese manufacturer is not a company out of nowhere, for some time it was the leader in the sale of smartphones in Poland and the second largest globally. The Chinese have already got used to the fact that they are leading the world in mobile devices and they will not easily be pushed from their position.
In turn, while building its ecosystem, Microsoft had a portfolio of dying-out Windows Phone in its portfolio, and Amazon from the beginning treated Fire Phone as an experiment, not one of the foundations of its company. In the case of Huawei, this situation is completely different, which makes the Chinese determined to bet on their own and I think that sooner than later they will succeed.
