After a break of almost 2.5 months, scheduled flights return in Poland. At the beginning only regional operated by the national carrier PLL LOT. I decided to check what such a flight looks like in the "new normality", while maintaining sanitary rigor. Here is the report from the Wroclaw-Warsaw flight.
From March 15, Poland was prohibited from operating scheduled flights. On June 1 flights return, although only regional. Planes fly up to twice a day from Warsaw to Kraków, Poznań, Rzeszów, Szczecin, Wrocław and Zielona Góra. We will fly to Gdańsk three times a day, and the Krakow - Gdańsk route is served only once a day. Airports and the carrier had to adapt to the new rules of passenger service, which require many changes. How does it look in practice?
"Do you want to take a picture of me?"
The robot in a mask and with a screen on its stomach informs that for now we recommend from Wrocław only to Warsaw, but soon to other places. The screen displays the passenger's body temperature. The temperature is measured by a non-contact thermometer standing a few meters away on a tripod. This is the first element of control that is located right after entering the airport, where a border guard employee sits behind the glass.
To pass the first check, you must show a flight ticket and ID. Bystanders who are not flying or not working at the airport cannot enter the airport. Unfortunately, I could not photograph this position, but as soon as I approached the robot, he immediately said "Do you want to take a picture of me?", After his plastic eyeballs popped out of his head. I took the picture and the robot politely thanked. The eyes returned to their place.
I arrived at the airport 1 hour before boarding, 1.5 hours before departure. The airport was completely empty - workers were hanging around in several places, puffing around every corner. An airport employee gave interviews at the entrance.
Security control in Wrocław never lasts long, but this time I broke the record. The whole process took maybe 2 minutes. "You are the first passenger today," I heard leaving.
The departure lounge was also empty. A few minutes before departure, a dozen or so passengers sat in the waiting room. An employee of the airport in the visor approached everyone and gave a document with information about the obligation to notify the carrier if I had contact with people suffering from COVID-19 or I have such symptoms myself.
My old custom was I went to Gate Bar, where I always bought a delicious donut and burnt coffee. There were no sweets today. Only bitter coffee.
A few minutes before boarding, a nice voice from the loudspeakers announced that the Priority Check-in service was unavailable and passengers would be called according to the seat allocated on the plane. It also happened. Boarding for a handful of people lasted about 10 minutes.
The new rules also apply, and in principle, above all on board aircraft. The Regulation of the Council of Ministers of 29 May introduced a new provision stipulating that no more than half of seats may be occupied on a passenger plane. LOT embarked on the flight to Warsaw by the Embraer 175, which holds 82 passengers, so a maximum of 41 passengers could fly. However, there were fewer people on this particular cruise.
LOT Polish Airlines has introduced seat reservations in "checkerboard". This means that in the 2 + 2 system, passengers take turns taking the left or right seat so that they do not sit directly behind or next to another passenger. For larger aircraft, such as the Boeing 737-800 NG, which have a 3 + 3 seating arrangement, passengers occupy two extreme seats, and only the middle seat can be occupied in the next row.
During the flight, only two situations surprised me
The first was refreshments. I expected a traditional little Prince Polo and water, but I got a small apple bun packed in a plastic bag, a handkerchief and a 0.5-liter bottle of water.
The second was the location of passengers. Almost all the passengers sitting at the aisle changed their windows. Flight attendants apparently had no problem with that.
In addition, everything went as usual. The sun was shining, there were no clouds, so I calmly enjoyed the wonderful views. The trip was pure pleasure, although you had to wear a face mask all the time. For a flight of only 45 minutes this was not a problem. However, I do not envy people who will travel this way for hours in the future.
Chopin Airport in Warsaw greeted with emptiness and ... messages about severe fines for grouping, not covering mouth and nose, and lack of hygiene. Flying in a "new normality" is certainly not the same as before, but it is not bad. There are not many differences in practice, I count most of them in favor.
