On Monday it was announced that a mysterious wallpaper crashes smartphones and sends them into a boot loop. Now Google seems to be sure to have found the solution.
Previously, it was thought that the problem had to do with the color space of the image, which was incorrectly coded. But, according to Google's Romain Guy (an expert in how Android handles images and colors), the cause is probably much simpler and has to do with the way the luminance for the image is calculated in grayscale.
In certain cases, the grayscale values may exceed a maximum due to a rounding error in the calculation that Android uses, and the system user interface then flips out and crashes when the number is too large - apparently leading to a restart.
Since the image is set as the background, this error will occur again and again in safe mode and inevitably result in a boot loop.
Romain Guy of Google believes the problem has nothing to do with the color space, and has confirmed another explanation of Android's luminance calculation. Both Google and Samsung are aware of the problem and are apparently testing their fixes.
