Dropbox has a new idea. One of the most popular cloud services on the market now also wants to be a password manager.
For a very long time, Dropbox kept to what it was best at - offering a high-quality network drive for individual clients and teams, constantly improving its applications and attracting an increasing customer base.
Over time, however, Dropbox - understandably - wanted to expand its portfolio. This is how the Dropbox Paper application, a minimalist text editor closely integrated with the cloud, or Dropbox Transfer - an alternative to WeTransfer or MyAirBridge for quick file sharing.
Now Dropbox is preparing a service that we need today.
Here is Dropbox Passwords .
Dropbox Passwords is a password manager. A service like LastPass, 1Password or Dashlane. Instead of remembering dozens of passwords or, worse, using one password in dozens of places, Password Manager remembers and stores passwords for services and sites. He can complete the password himself, generate a new security, and also carry out a security audit to see if we are using too many similar passwords in too many places.
Today, when such a huge part of our lives has moved to the network, this type of application should be the basic tool used on every phone and computer. Unfortunately, it's still not.
Dropbox Passwords has the advantage in this matter in the form of the crazy popularity of its cloud. According to data for 2019, 600 million users use Dropbox - in a paid and free form. 14.6 million pays for the company's services. The service works in 20 languages and there is a good chance that even if someone from Dropbox does not associate, they know the brand and associate it with secure data storage.
This means that Dropbox Passwords can encourage users of other password managers as well as those who have never used such an application from the very beginning.
Dropbox Passwords is available in beta.
Password manager from Dropbox has so far hit only one platform. It's available on Android only in beta - we won't download it without an invitation. Probably closed tests are underway to identify potential errors before making the service available to all users.
For now, we know nothing more about Dropbox Passwords except that it will allow "one-touch login" and "synchronization between devices." That is the standard offered by every other password manager.
Dropbox has kept the existence of this application secret until now, but it can be expected that since its existence has come to light, we will know more details in days.
Personally, I would like to know if Dropbox Passwords will be available on all platforms and whether it will be possible to conveniently migrate from another service.
Multipltformity is the basis for password managers. A good service of this type must have not only a mobile application, but also a web and desktop application as well as browser plug-ins. All browsers so that the user has access to their passwords, regardless of what software they use.
I hope that Dropbox Passwords will not be another Dropbox Paper. The Dropbox document editor has not gained much popularity because it is an application extremely stripped of its function. However, I hope that the password manager will not be such and, apart from storing and supplementing our data, it will also be able to do other things, such as generating the passwords, security audits or, e.g. storage of digital documents and cards.
Dropbox can win a lot on this manager, but it can go unnoticed. Screenshots of the application with the inscription "premium app" allow us to believe that Passwords will not be a free service. As a result, the application will have to defend itself to convince users that it is worth using it instead of e.g. the free LastPass or BitWarden.
