The Fujifilm X Webcam program released today allows you to connect selected Fujifilm cameras to your computer via a USB cable and use them as a webcam. Just a simple installation, a few settings on the camera and we are striving on Zoom or another program. So much theory. In practice ... it came out as always.
Only selected Fujifilm cameras will work
First of all, Fujifilm X Webcam should only work with selected Fujifilm cameras. The list of compatible devices includes Fujifilm X-H1, X-Pro2, X-Pro3 , X-T2, X-T3 , X-T4 mirrorless cameras and medium format cameras from the GFX series.
Critical voices immediately appeared on the Web that Fujifilm had forgotten (to put it mildly) about the users of cheaper models from the X-TXX series, such as Fujifilm X-T30 and X-TXXX, or X-100. However, the real reason is quite different.
Fujifilm X Webcam is based on the camera's tethering function, i.e. capturing live view. Until now, it has been used mainly during static studio photos to have a live view on a larger screen. The new program allows you to redirect the image from this function to programs for video conferencing. Therefore, if your camera model does not have such a function, Fujifilm X Webcam is not able to use it. Cheaper models that are missing on the compatibility list do not have this option. And that's it, the mystery solved.
However, this is not the end of the problems, because the application works only on PCs with Windows 10
What's more, as we read under the tiny star on the Fujifilm website :
Only factory-installed operating systems are supported; support is not guaranteed on computers built at home or upgraded from earlier versions of Windows.
I wanted to test this program, but as a Mac user for many years, I am injured. Fortunately, my wife must have Windows 10 installed on her MacBook Air Legal, bought directly from Microsoft. So I tried to install Fujifilm X Webcam there. Unfortunately, the installer shows an error. Installation is almost complete, but the program is not on the list. There is no information on Fujifilm's website about any support. And this is where the tests and my hopes for using Fujifilm X-T3 as a webcam stood.
Fujifilm has never been known for its high-quality camera software. Their app for operating cameras from a smartphone has been on the market for many years, but to this day it has a lot of errors, it is slow and has an opaque interface. I am afraid that Fujifilm X Webcam will be similar. I have the impression that someone was preparing this program in a hurry so that only the Japanese would develop and improve it. I count on it, but I don't expect it to happen soon.
This is not an alternative to capturing 4K image via HDMI, but it still improves the quality of video calls
The lucky Fujifilm X Webcam works for, report that the captured image has a low resolution of 1024 × 768 at 30 fps. Therefore, this is not an alternative to full-fledged 4K video capture via HDMI, but it is enough for Zoom.
The image from the camera, however, gives a clear improvement in video conferencing. We can use a bright lens that has a nice blurry background or portrait glass with a higher focal length, which gives the face natural shapes. We can also enable film simulation modes on a given camera like Provia, Eterna or Acros. In this way, we can edit the color of the image with a few clicks. I don't know another simple solution of this type. The question remains about the possibilities of new software or the potential overheating of the camera.
Solutions of this type should be standard
Fujifilm is another camera manufacturer that has noticed that in recent months people have been using video conferencing powerfully. It is a pity that this has only happened now, a few months after the start of the new trend. A similar program was previously made available by Canon .
The ability to connect the camera and use it as a webcam should be standard for years. Currently, most cameras only allow 4K or FHD image capture, but the whole process is difficult and expensive. Without a special HDMI video capture device for around 700-1000 PLN, you won't have to spend a lot of time learning a special program like OBS. This is not a solution for the average user.
I am surprised by the approach of photographic equipment producers who, with one program, could significantly increase the current value of cameras and encourage potential new users to buy. Especially in a situation where sales in recent months have fallen even by 3/4.
