The aluminum hat wearers and conspiracy theorists or simply fearful people warn against the use of the new Google and Apple interfaces for COVID-19 tracing. Supposedly, data is secretly collected, which of course is humbug .
To use the interface under Android and iOS, Bluetooth and the activated location detection are absolutely necessary. But what hardly anyone knows, Android phones have previously communicated via Bluetooth.
The "Nearby" feature did something very similar. And for years without anyone having been warned or feared. "Nearby" was simply intended as a communication interface via Bluetooth. This enabled the Android smartphone to communicate with other or other hardware nearby.
With COVID-19 tracing, too, Bluetooth and location detection must be activated, just like always with "Nearby".
"Developers used this technology to inform users about free WiFi nearby, provide guides in a museum, and list transit plans at bus stops."
Google
However, Google stopped using "Nearby" in October 2018 after almost 3 years. The feature was often used for spam, so it was probably less well received by users.
