Huawei MatePad Pro review

After the successful MediaPad's, Huawei is now also attacking the sector of high-performance professional tablets. With an attractive price and a great bundle offer for the launch, the combination of MatePad Pro, Stylus and Smart Magnetic Keyboard could be a productive notebook alternative for many.

In addition to the Huawei MatePad Pro in Midnight Gray, the matching Huawei M-Pencil and the Huawei Smart Magnetic Keyboard were also available for the test. This means that the 10.8 ″ tablet can be converted into a fully-fledged and very productive work tool in just a few simple steps. And that works surprisingly well.

The in-house EMUI 10.1 interface builds on the current Android 10 and offers numerous improvements and adjustments. So you can put the typical Android surface in a desktop mode. It is reminiscent of Windows or Linux and lets you work with up to eight apps open at the same time, which run without the loss of performance.

The test quickly showed that you can work with this device without Google services and work very productively. A current Android 10 operating system is running on the MatePad Pro, but because of the escalating US trade dispute, one has to officially forego the Google services including the popular Play Store. However, it quickly became apparent that this is less important for a device used primarily for work than for current smartphones. The apps from Microsoft such as Office, Outlook or Teams run perfectly and just like the WordPress app, without restrictions.

A mouse can also be integrated via Bluetooth, but the combination of that of the keyboard protective cover, with which the key stroke of 1.3 mm can be typed comfortably, and the M-Pencil also work very well. The latter not only invites you to write handwritten notes and annotations, but is also an excellent mouse substitute that can even be used to mark things on the screen without touching it. The pressure sensitivity with 4,096 levels and the incline support also allow intuitive drawing. Incidentally, the pen is charged at lightning speed and completely wirelessly by being magnetically attached to the edge of the tablet.

Together with the swiping gestures, you can expect a lively and brisk operation that never stops even with a higher computing load such as converting larger graphics.

The hardware

The heart of the Huawei MatePad Pro is the current HiSilicon Kirin 990 processor. The SoC, which is manufactured using the 7-nm process, consists of a total of eight cores, each of which is made up of two Cortex-A76 cores with up to 2.86 GHz, two with up to 2.36 GHz and four Cortex-A55 cores divide with up to 1.95 GHz. A Mali-G76 GPU with 16 computing cores provides the necessary graphics power. The graphics unit offers higher performance than previous versions with less energy consumption and better gaming optimization. Sounds good, but can this computing power also be used properly?

A cooling system consisting of twelve layers, which relies on artificial intelligence for heat management, ensures normal temperature even under high loads and, above all, that the CPU does not have to be clocked down too quickly. This is especially important if you have to work with several programs at the same time. The SoC is supported by 8 GB LPDDR4X dual-channel RAM and 128 GB internal memory.

The 10.8 ″ display has a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 pixels and is equipped with LCD-IPS technology. Rich colors, the very good viewing angle and the very good brightness values please. There is also an extra plus for the sound, a system from Huawei partner Harman Kardon is used, which can score with very clear sound and a lot of volume.

The back of the device looks like metal, but it consists of a very stable and glass fiber connection. This not only has the advantage that it is very robust, but that the 7,250 mAh battery can also be charged wirelessly. The device is fully charged in about two hours via cable with the supplied 20 watt power supply, up to 40 watts are supported and a charging time of less than 90 minutes. You can master a 12 hour working day without a new charge. The Huawei MatePad Pro supports WIFI 5 (unfortunately not yet WIFI 6) with a decent range, Bluetooth 5.1 and GPS (GLONASS, Beidou, Galileo) are on board.

Play with the Huawei MatePad Pro

On paper, the Huawei MatePad Pro is a perfect gaming device. The 10.8 ″ screen has a resolution of 2K and the HiSilicon Kirin 990-SoC has a modern 16-core Mali-G76 as a graphics processor. In practice, of course, one inevitably encounters the lack of the Google Play Store. Of course there is the possibility to install the Google Services with a few tricks and reading into the matter, but even without this gray area you can do a lot with the device.

You can catch a lot with the Huawei AppGallery, Phone Clone (which allows you to easily transfer many purchased games from your Android smartphone or tablet) or the More Apps Search, with which you can find many apps. Alternative app stores are also available. Numerous apps and games and even retrogaming emulators legally find their way onto the device.

What applies to games is of course important for all types of apps. The first point of contact here is the Huawei AppGallery, in which more and more local apps from local companies can also be found. Well-known providers also recognize the signs of the times. For example, Facebook already offers official APK downloads from WhatsApp and Facebook.

Streaming services

Unfortunately, the Huawei does not yet have Widevine L1 certification and multimedia use is restricted to SD resolution on Netflix and Amazon. While the Amazon Prime app can be easily installed, you have to use a special APK on Netflix. YouTube, on the other hand, also works in full resolution without problems, if you want you can also install YouTube Vanced.

Conclusion

The basic equipment of the Huawei MatePad Pro is available for EUR 499.00. A great price for this device. Although you have to do without Google Services (without tricks and post-installation), the alternatives offered, including the tools and apps from Microsoft, are a good replacement. With the MatePad Pro you get a loyal companion with a good display, a decent battery life, top performance, top workmanship and a very reasonable camera at a very fair price. ( Shock² )
