iPhone SE (2020) went on sale today and is already in our hands. We checked how copes cheap new Apple phone in practice.

The 2016 iPhone SE married the compact iPhone 5s, which is beloved by many, with the components of the much larger iPhone 6s. After four years, history repeats itself, and the new iPhone SE has a kennel straight from the iPhone 8, which was packed with guts coming almost entirely from iPhone 11 with the Apple A13 Bionic processor at the forefront.

At first glance, the iPhone SE (2020) is no different from its predecessors, i.e. the iPhone 6, 6s, 7 and 8. Against the background of these newer models with a note, which themselves are already starting to smack the mouse, if compared to the Android competition , looks archaic. Despite this, after a few hours that I spent with this device, I already know that it will be a hit.

iPhone SE (2020) is a smartphone for these conservative Apple fans.

If someone after a few years still has not convinced with Face ID, then he will be pleased that the iPhone SE from 2020 has a classic fingerprint reader in the frame under the screen. People who complain about the size of smartphones will also find something for themselves - the new Apple phone has smaller dimensions than even the smallest of the iPhones introduced for sale in the last two years.

I admit that after more than two years spent with iPhones X, XS and 11, after picking up the new iPhone SE I found a small surprise. I remember, after all, that the change from the 4.7-inch model to the 5.5-inch without frames went painless to me, and the slightly larger housing size did not cause any discomfort at that time.

After switching the other way, I get the impression that the iPhone SE (2020) is just a thumbnail image of a real phone.

Certainly, the negative impression is intensified by the fact that the iPhone SE screen holds much less content than my iPhone 11 Pro - both due to the physical size of the display and a much lower resolution of only 1334 x 750 pixels, which translates into 16 proportions: 9. To make matters worse, this is an LCD screen when in top iPhones we are dealing with OLEDs.

Again, however, Apple surprises with the quality of its LCD displays, and the iPhone SE (2020) has the same pixel density as the iPhone 11 from last year, amounting to 326 ppi. Colors, brightness and contrast are at a phenomenal level here and I do not feel discomfort when switching from a phone costing 5.2 thousand. for one for which you pay 2,200 zł.

Well, at least not because of the display.

The most problems for me are handling a new Apple phone. Getting rid of the Home button on the iPhone X has completely changed the way you navigate iOS. The gestures introduced in it were later even transferred alive to the iPad. For three years, instead of pressing the button under the screen to go to the desktop, you need to drag your finger from the side edge.

The iPhone SE is a return to the past. Swiping from the bottom opens the Control Center, which I have been calling for three years by downloading the notification bar from the upper right corner. What is worse, the way of navigating the system cannot be changed in the settings, just like this new way of navigating with gestures cannot be turned off in the iPad.

For this lack of consistency Apple gets a big downside here.

A few things, however, surprised me pleasantly and with joy I welcomed the option of suspecting the percentage of battery charge on the top bar, which newer iPhones do not give - in them this information appears only after expanding the Control Center. Fortunately, I don't have any major problems typing on the on-screen keyboard.

Returning from a 5.5-inch screen with a 4.7-inch aspect ratio is less painful than a change from 4.7-inch to 4-inch. This is mainly due to the fact that on iPhones X, XS and 11 Pro the displays have a much larger area, but also different proportions than on the iPhone SE (2018). The difference between them is primarily length, but not width.

When using iPhone SE (2020), I lack vertical space, but not horizontal.

Due to the size of the screen, you can preview fewer items in the same list at once, but thanks to the 16: 9 aspect ratio, the lines contain a similar number of characters. The interface elements on the iPhone SE (2020) are slightly smaller than on the iPhone 11 Pro, which helps to pack the content. In general, in terms of utility, the new model does not cause major problems.

As for the operation of the operating system itself, I have no objections. iPhone SE (2020) works like a rocket, because it has the same Apple A13 Bionic system as in more than twice as expensive iPhone 11 Pro. The system renders a lower resolution interface for this. It is true that there is 1 GB less RAM than in the top model, but I have not felt the lack yet.

I am intrigued by the camera.

We don't know exactly what photo module has landed on the iPhone SE. It is possible that this is a mesh from the iPhone XR / XS or a completely different module. In addition, it was paired with algorithms and artificial intelligence of the Apple A13 processor and there were presumptions that thanks to this it would take photos almost as good as the iPhone 11 Pro and maybe even better than the iPhone XR and XS.

I took several photos with the iPhone SE (2020), XS and 11 Pro in the same conditions - both the main camera and one selfie. The results are not bad, especially if you compare them to the photos from the top model for 2018. You can expect a broader analysis of the camera in a separate material.

iPhone SE (2020) - hot or not?

After a few hours, I was convinced that iPhone SE (2020) should not be bought by people who previously had an iPhone X or newer. Even if someone did not like you, but you have already got used to Face ID and navigation with gestures, the 4.7-inch screen with huge frames will be a powerful step back. However, this is not a telephone for such people.

iPhone SE (2020) will be a great choice for people who necessarily want an iPhone but cannot or cannot afford to release or simply do not want to spend over 3,000. PLN for a phone in the form of an iPhone XR or iPhone 11. The new device, taking into account how great components are mounted in it and how good it takes pictures, is great priced.

However, remember that this is all just a first impression.
