There is still no strongman for privateer. Mechanical keyboard Corsair K95 Platinum RGB XT - review

Corsairs feel breath on their backs. Competition - especially from Logitech - has caught up with the quality of its own mechanical keyboards. Hence the Corsair K95 Platinum RGB XT, which is an improved version of the American flagship keyboard, designed to remind rivals of their place in the row.

How many people, so many opinions. Each player has their own preferences, favorite producers and individual purchasing budgets. Hence the wealth of sentences and experiences we can find on the Internet. Being at the experiments, my wide fingers tapped on dozens of different keyboards. That is why I have no doubt that Corsair has been producing the best mechanical keyboards for players for several years. I have no doubt that for some time the competition has been doing everything it can to detonate the Corsairs.

Hence the Corsair K95 Platinum RGB XT - an improved version of the Corsairs flagship keyboard.

The device in a huge part resembles the Corsair K95 RGB Platinum keyboard, which I reviewed for you a few years ago . New for the model from 2020 is the extension of the possibility of an additional vertical side block G1 - G6 with support for functions characteristic for stream deck devices. The second new is even more durable keycaps made in more expensive PBT technology.

What is PBT? It is polybutylene terephthalate - a polymer distinguished by high impact strength, i.e. the material's resistance to cracking under physical, variable loading. In addition, polyethylene terephthalate retains its matt for a very long time. This means that the keys (especially WSAD and space) will not begin to flash after a few months of intense gameplay. I have been testing the K95 TX since January 2020 and in fact - no gloss was found.

At last, Corsair adds a good quality pad to its top keyboards.

In my reviews of this manufacturer's keyboards, I have always reiterated the terrible policy regarding this element. An unpleasant piece of plastic was added to the solid, well-made and expensive keyboard to pretend to be a palm rest. It's a bit like you bought a Mercedes S Class and immediately drove it shopping in Biedronka. Something is biting here. Something does not fit here.

The new pad has finally been lined with soft, ecological leather. The upper surface nicely collapses under the hands, it is easy to clean, and it is relatively elegant and pleasing to the eye. Years of beating this element of Corsair keyboards while writing reviews finally brought the effect. The question is why it is so late. This solution should already be present in the standard K95 model released a few years ago.

Another pleasant addition is several sets of overlays with a pleasant, addictive surface. In the box you will find the WSAD set for action games and first-person shooters, as well as the QWERDF set dedicated to MOBA lovers. Added to this are alternative overlays for an additional side column key for macros / for streamers.

I wonder if Corsair missed the opportunity to introduce more news.

The debut version of XT slightly differs in mass and dimensions, but in principle we are talking about exactly the same model as a few years ago. This has its natural advantages, because K95 is one of the best mechanical keyboards for players. If not the best. However, this does not mean that Corsair has achieved his ideal. The company missed an opportunity to make some additional improvements.

Take the USB cable for example. Solid, massive, with a dense braid and two ends - one supply, the other optional, serving as a pass-through. It would be great if such a cable could be disconnected. Pulling it through a special hole in the desk is a torment. The second issue is the pass-through standard itself. Enjoys the presence of an additional socket to connect headphones or computer mouse, but wonders about the choice of standard. USB 2.0 on the keyboard for 850 PLN? Corsiar is getting poorer again as before with the palm rest.

The premiere of the XT model is also a good opportunity to wonder if it's time for keyboards with solid RGBW backlighting. Although the color personalization options in the dedicated software are impressive, so choosing the classic, white and uniform backlight lacks the wow effect. Maybe it's a matter of new PBT keys?

I am very pleased that Corsair has kept all my beloved items.

A wonderful multimedia roll is back, pleasant to the touch and extremely precise. What's more, it can be reprogrammed. For example, to use it to switch between various spells in the role-playing game. In turn, iCUE programming is in my opinion one of the best macro creation programs ever created. The number of opportunities for dedicated players using this software is impressive. A separate profile for World of Warcraft, a separate one for the text editor, a separate one for Valorant, all switched with a dedicated button - today I can't imagine acting differently. It is worth adding that iCUE has extended support to MacOS, including Stream Deck tools.

The massive aluminum on the top of the housing has also been preserved, distinguishing K95 from the rest of the plastic keyboards. Cold, brushed metal not only fastens the entire structure solidly, but also creates a sense of communing with the premium product. Well, let's make an appointment: when you spend 850 PLN on a mechanic, you don't just want a good keyboard. You want something extra. The new Cherry MX Speed and MX Brown switches will be extra, twice as durable as before. However, I have no way of verifying this information. The worn K95 still works like clockwork, despite a few years on the back of the neck.

As for the operation of switches, work ergonomics or noise, I refer you to my test of the first K95 . It's basically the same design, with the same mechanisms, layout and shape. It was great, it's great. I see no sense in repetition.

Keyboard Corsair K95 Platinum RGB XT - a new king?

From the perspective of the K95 owner, replacing the model with a newer one is completely unnecessary. It is much better to buy the new washer itself. Although there are a number of interesting additions in the XT box, it's a shame to spend 850 PLN on them. Even if you are a fan of the brand. I also have ethical doubts about support for Elgato and Stream Deck devices only in the new model. It seems that older Corsairs keyboards could also offer similar solutions, and the only obstacle is the artificial software blockade of the manufacturer.

The biggest advantages:

  • The same high quality and great performance as the basic model K95
  • Even greater strength
  • Finally a good palm rest
  • Nice package of accessories in the box
  • Excellent software, full support for MacOS
  • The best volume roll in the world <3
  • Thanks to this premiere, the price of the older, still brilliant K95 may decrease

The biggest disadvantages:

  • USB 2.0 in pass-through
  • Dizzying price (850 PLN)
  • The thick, difficult to control cable should be detachable
  • Low quality legs
  • Elgato and Stream Deck support only for this keyboard

However, if you have not used the Corsairs products before, and are looking for a solid premium keyboard for years, you've come to the right place. Corsair K95 Platinum RGB XT is undoubtedly one of the few best mechanical keyboards available on the market. I also hope that thanks to the premiere of this model the basic version of K95 will get a little cheaper, thanks to which it will be included in the price range of a larger group of players. Because it's really worth having.
